前言：
漫長的BOM 2010 Preview總算是來到最後一回了
（其實還有兩部未上映的電影尚未翻譯，不過我應該都不打算翻了
納尼亞傳奇我一點興趣都沒有，至於柯恩兄弟的新片雖然我很期待
不過那篇文章太長我怕會吃不消，加上先前iLook已經有詳盡的介紹
所以我短期之內，應該是不會對那篇介紹文下手）

今天我介紹的兩部電影，固然是我刻意的編排
但老實說，這也是因為這兩者的相關性太高了
（就像你報導蔡小姐的消息一定要提一下高先生，提到紅襪也忍不住
跟洋基比較一樣）

到底有多相關呢？我想我就不再贅言了

2010 Preview: Saw VII (in 3D)

Analysis: For its first five movies, the Saw series owned Halloween, with Saw
II through Saw V all grossing over $30 million. It got to the point where
promos boasted that "If it's Halloween, it must be Saw." However, the grosses
became increasingly frontloaded as the years went on and as the quality of
the movies decreased. Then last year, thanks to lazy advertising and
unusually strong competition in surprise horror hit Paranormal Activity, Saw
VI flopped in the pre-Halloween slot, ending up with a $14.1 million opening
weekend on its way to a measly total of $27.7 million.

自從奪魂鋸上映五年以來，該系列可說是萬聖節的第一選擇，
其中第2與3集更是有超過3千萬美金的首映收入，片商的廣告也樂得打出
「要看奪魂鋸才算度過萬聖節」的口號。然而，該系列這幾年來的收入

Recognizing that the formula had grown tired, producers decided to spice
things up a bit for the seventh installment by adding 3D. That technique
worked last year for the Final Destination series. Fourth installment, The
Final Destination, was released in 3D and went on to become the franchise's
highest-grossing entry with $66.5 million. With the Final Destination series,
though, audiences believed there were still more thrills to be had. Based on
Saw VI's measly earnings, it remains to be seen whether people also believe
this to be true of the Saw series.

奪魂鋸的製片們似乎是了解到該系列的公式已經逐漸失效，所以他們決定
要以3D化的方式為第七集加點料。這種技術在去年的「絕命終結站4」中
的確收到效果，並以6650萬的總票房成為絕命系列最賣座的一集。

While Saw VII is mixing up the formula a bit with 3D, it is once again
scheduled for the weekend before Halloween. This has worked so well for
horror movies in the past, though, that the sequel to Saw VI killer
Paranormal Activity is currently scheduled for the same weekend. It is
unlikely that both ultimately open on Oct. 22, but the makers of Paranormal
Activity 2 appear to have the upper hand in the battle over the date,
considering the first movie grossed $107.9 million last year. If Saw VII is
forced to move away from Halloween, horror fans may not move with it.

儘管奪魂鋸7已經將3D技術混入公式化劇情中，但他的檔期依舊排在萬聖節
的前一週，雖然說過去這種排片方式對恐怖片來說相當有效，

While the combination of higher 3D ticket prices and the opportunity to
experience all the blood and guts in an extra dimension should help Saw VII
regain some of the box office strength of the previous entries, its going to
have a tough time reestablishing Saw as a bankable franchise for Lionsgate.

總之，雖然說3D帶來的更高票價與更多角度體驗血腥、挑戰膽量，對於奪魂鋸7
重拾過往的名聲是一項利多，但對獅子們影業來說，要讓奪魂鋸繼續打造成
能賺錢的電影品牌，仍然是一場艱困的任務

2010 Preview: Paranormal Activity 2

Analysis: The first Paranormal Activity was a sleeper success that became one
of the higher-grossing entries in the popular supernatural horror sub-genre
($107.9 million), and it surged in the weeks leading up to Halloween, goring
the seasonal Saw movie in the process. Though Saw VI only grossed $27.7
million, distributor Lionsgate green-lighted Saw VII 3D for the franchise's
typical Halloween launch. Then, in a game of chicken, Paramount announced
Paranormal Activity 2 for the same Oct. 22 weekend as Saw VII. Paramount even
hired Saw VI director Kevin Greutert, but Lionsgate fired back by exercising
an option in their contract to have Greutert direct Saw VII, leaving
Paranormal 2 without a director at the time of this writing

靈動：鬼影實錄是去年最意想不到的票房黑馬，不僅以超過一億的票房
成為美國最賣座的超自然恐佈片之一，甚至還將老前輩奪魂鋸不客氣地
修理了一頓。

奪魂鋸6儘管只進帳了2770萬，但發行奪片的獅子門影業仍然通過了奪魂鋸3D
的拍攝案，準備讓他在萬聖節繼續大殺四方。然後，基於鬥雞遊戲的心態，
派拉蒙也宣布靈動2將會跟奪魂鋸7同一天上映。派拉蒙甚至打算聘請奪魂鋸6
的導演凱文，但卻遭到獅子門影業以執行選擇權的方式，讓凱文繼續執導
奪魂鋸7，因此靈動2在這篇文章在截稿前還在尋找導演中

我承認將chicken game跟鬥雞牽扯在一起，其實不是太準確說法
因為美國人往往將雞視為跟懦弱膽小的象徵
但讓人玩味的是，chicken game背後暗喻的雙方都不想退讓
卻又巧妙地與鬥雞的帶給人形象完全吻合

這裡的鬥雞所意指的，當然就是派拉蒙不希望奪魂鋸繼續獨吞萬聖節檔期的市場
於是也決定在萬聖節也推出靈動2

2.後來靈動2找來的導演是Kip Williams，他之前的作品都不是票房大片，
比較引人矚目的身分是「琴葛蕾」Famke Janssen的前夫

Last August, there was a contentious weekend when both The Final Destination
and Halloween II (2009) debuted, and, while it wasn't a total bloodbath, the
stronger franchise did prevail: The Final Destination (buoyed by 3D) opened
to $27.4 million versus Halloween II's $16.3 million, and ultimately had
twice the gross: $66.5 million compared to $33.3 million.

去年八月，影壇原本預計會有一場激烈的驚悚片戰爭－
絕命終結站4 V.S. 血染萬聖節，最後的戰果雖然不算是大屠殺，
但較強勢且有3D加持的前者不僅在首映時遠勝後者至少1千萬，總票房甚至
有著1倍的差距

Someone may flinch this time, but it's likely all for naught: Saw's on the
wane, and Paranormal Activity 2 is unlikely to repeat its predecessor's
success even under the best of circumstances.

有些人可能會將去年的戰果保守地推估到今年身上，但這很有可能是一場鬧劇，
因為奪魂鋸已經逐漸退燒，而靈動2即使是在最好的情況下，也不可能複製去年
的成功

Horror sequels, with the notable exception of Saw, typically make a fraction
of their predecessors. It's difficult to scare people the same way twice, and
Saw only sustained itself with its thriller elements and twisty plots. Check
out the drops in grosses from The Ring to The Ring Two, from The Grudge to
The Grudge 2 and, most notably, The Blair Witch Project to Book of Shadows:
Blair Witch 2. The first Blair Witch was a sensation, grossing $140.5 million
back in 1999. Its 2000 sequel, though, managed just $26.4 million.

除了奪魂鋸之外，恐佈片的續集大部分的票房表現，都要跟原作打對折－
畢竟，你很難用相同的招數嚇到觀眾，而奪魂鋸除了驚悚的元素之外，
也是因為有曲折的情節才能支撐票房。這些狗尾絮貂的案例，
包括七夜怪譚西洋篇（2002/2005）、咒怨美國版（2004/2006），
至於最有名的，就不得不提惡夜叢林與其續集了。惡夜1在1999年上映時
可說是一票難求，進帳了1.45億的票房，但隔年他續集的收入，卻只剩下前作
的7分之1

The first Paranormal Activity's pattern was eerily similar to the first Blair
Witch Project, though not nearly as popular. Both were micro-budget, "found
footage" supernatural horrors that impressed in limited release, exploded as
they rolled out nationwide and, then, flamed out quickly after hitting
nationwide release, marred by mixed word-of-mouth. Both also fooled many
people into thinking they were real, but the jig is up and all signs point to
Paranormal Activity being as ephemeral a horror event as Blair Witch, which
does not bode well for its sequel.

靈動雖然受歡迎程度與惡夜叢林有段差距，但兩者在格局上卻是詭異地互似。
兩者都是超低成本製作、都是在小規模上映時就讓人印象深刻的側拍型
靈異恐佈片，並且都在全國聯映時將聲勢炒到最高點，卻又極速退燒，
並引發正反不一的混雜口碑評價。兩者也都讓不少觀眾以為他們看到的影片
都是真的，最後卻證明只是一場惡作劇。

種種的跡象都顯示－靈動跟惡夜叢林一樣，是生命週期短暫的恐佈片活動，
而這對於他的續集..似乎不是好預兆

BOM這一系列看下來，會讓作者提出潛在弱點的電影固然不在少數
但通常還是會以樂觀與期望的態度作結
因此像這兩篇公然不看好所介紹電影的文章，我還是頭一次見到
不過這也充分反映出，作者對這兩部驚悚片所感到的不確定性
畢竟，即使你看了預告片，你也很難猜的出電影要演什麼
（相較之下，即使全面啟動宣傳初期也賣很大的關子
但我至少還知道那是一部結合心理學的科幻動作片）

不過這個問題搬到台灣，答案應該會簡單許多
在台灣觀眾普遍對自拍性恐佈片感到排斥的情形下
我想奪魂鋸應該還是會比靈動2開出更好的票房

最後順道一提，我前幾天逛了娛樂週刊的網站
發現它們幾個禮拜前，已經發表了他們對秋季檔電影的展望
而且還會摘錄一些導演與演員的談話
跟BOM比較側重比較過往類似電影票房相比，讀起來算是另有一番風味
如果我有空的話，我還是會將一些BOM沒有介紹到的電影
一一翻出來跟大家分享
