Reality TV Games participated in a post-elimination conference call with Ameri
ca Next Top Model 12's Tahlia Brookings.
**************************************************
1. Why and how did you come to be cast on Top Model?
My father registered me online for the casting call. So my dad opened the door
and I took advantage of it and now you get to watch me on the show.
2. How did you like living in New York City and the Top Model house?
It was very fun being there, I loved the environment but I don't think that I
would want to live in New York permanently, but visiting there would not be a
problem. New York is very different from Phoenix, I was there in Novemeber and
December so it was colder than what I am used to. The house was extremely gorg
eous and you can just tell that how much work was put into creating that house
by the producers, staff and Tyra herself.
3. Overall did you think that you were portrayed fairly? Were you the only
unhappy one?
I would like to think that I was portrayed accurately. I didn't see any flaws i
n the editing of the show. Everyone was definitely more enthusiastic and excite
d about being there. I can see that the majority of the girls showed their exci
tement on their faces, In my case, I wore my emotions on my [sleeve], about bei
ng homesick. I think that is what defeated me in the end.
4. Were you surprised by your elimination, some were because you had been given
so much positive feedback after you first call out?
I wasn't completely blown away by it, you could kind of see it coming. It's one
of those things where if you think you are going to get the boot, then you're
gonna get the boot. Looking at how the judges were, I can see how they decided
to choose me to go rather than Allison.
5. How did you feel about your makeover? Are you planning on keeping the look o
r changing it?
At first I was really shocked by it, trying to figure out how I was going to wo
rk with it. I always wanted blond hair, but I could never figure out how it wou
ld fit with my skin tone. In the end I loved it, it was the most amazing color!
I don't know if you guys know this but it was actually weave. I have taken the
weave out but my hair has grown so when it is straight it looks like the weave
to some degree, not as full though.
6. I don't know if you are aware of this but you being cast on the show has spa
rked controversy on a few internet boards, specifically that with your burns an
d even your body type, pursuing modeling is not a sensible thing to do. Now tha
t you have had some exposure to modeling, is there a place in the modeling worl
d for Tahlia?
I would like to think that there's a place for me in the industry, I guess I wi
ll find out with whatever comes my way. My friends and family brought the discu
ssion boards to my attention a couple of times and it actually made me laugh a
little bit. One comment was that I look like a drag queen because you could see
my muscles. Well I was the only consistent athlete on the show, so of course I
would have muscles. Another remark was that I used my scars as a catalyst to g
et into on the show - that is not at all true, just because I am not afraid to
hide my scars I don't think that I should be penalize for that. Still people ar
e entitled to their own opinions.
7. Who did you clash with most in the house?
The funny thing is that with the whole thing it with me and Celia, well it wasn
't portrayed wrong, but at same time you may have gotten the impression that I
clashed with Celia the most. Actually I had more disagreements and was more fru
strated with Natalie than anyone else in house. Regarding Celia, Celia was the
person who tried to make it like "hey you can talk to me whenever you want, bla
h blah blah" trying to be the America's Next Top Model home mother, and then sh
e took what we had to say - especially me, and dealt with it in a way that was
not necessary.
8. Who were your closest friends in the house? Are you in touch with any of the
girls?
I would say that I made great acquaintances, it was kinda hard to make deep fri
endships when you are competing. I became closer and closer to Aminat, Fo and
Teyona and even Nijah when she was on. We did exchange emails and phone numbers
, but I am not in touch with any of the girls at this time.
9. Now that you are out of the running, who are you rooting for to become Ameri
ca's Next Top Model?
I am rooting Fo. I am also rooting for Aminat and Teyona, but I would really li
ke to see Fo take it.
10. What was the most consistent positive and negative feedback that you got fr
om the judges?
I wouldn't consider it negative, but they said that my confidence level was too
low for their liking. The positive feedback was that I had progressed and was
getting better. Getting positive feedback was heartwarming and made me want to
continue doing the show.
11. You seem to feel insecure about your lack of modeling experience on the sho
w, yet you had one of the higher call out averages, looking back do you think t
hat you sold yourself short, especially after hearing the judges comments about
you.
I am so disappointed with how poorly I handled myself!! If I can go back and re
do the show knowing what I know now and how I did, I would have shown my person
ality a lot more. The way I acted on the show, is not the way I act in person.
I hope that the agencies and the industry let me prove to them who I really am.
So yes, I did sell myself short. I did go into this completely without experie
nce and it was intimidating to be with girls who had done modeling type things
like still photography and shows. I think intimidated is the better word.
12. Then what would your friends say is your true personality?
They would say that I am ridiculously funny, outspoken and open, especially whe
n I am in my comfort zone... and very competitive! If you saw me on the volleyb
all court, you would be like "Oh my God, who's that??!!"
13. Which judge (or judges) do you think supported you the most?
I think all of the judges were fair, I don't think there was any bias there. Ty
ra was supportive, she stood up for me and continued to give me encouraging wor
ds throughout. Nigel too, even though he's very blunt and honest, I felt suppor
ted by him as well. You can learn from Nigel, during the photo shoot, I learned
a lot about posing from him, he taught me a lot about my angles and how to kee
p a photographer intrigued, because if the photographer is bored, then the work
is not going to be good.
14. What are your plans, do you plan to pursue modeling? What career path do yo
u ultimately want to pursue in life?
As far as modeling, I am really hoping that after doing this show and being see
n by agencies that opportunities will come out of this. I thought it was pretty
funny when Mr. Jay and Tyra mentioned something in the beginning about me poss
ibly being a better actress than a model, well if that's the case, then let's t
ry it! (laughs) I am hoping that an opportunity comes out of this, but I pretty
open minded as well.
15. What was your favorite photo shoot? What was your least favorite photo shoo
t?
My least favorite photo shoot was the first one, childhood games. I think becau
se that was the one the the one I struggled the most with. [How about the pose
off?] Oh yeah, that sequin dress they put me in was so horrible! I was more foc
used on trying to not fall of the stage than anything else.
My favorite was the Ellis Island shoot, not because I was called first, but bec
ause an event took place that was not aired that just melted my heart. It made
everything that was so horrible just go away. [Can you share it] During the pho
to shoot there were background models, the kids. One of the younger girls, her
name was Tahlia, like mine, but I don't know if she spells it the same way. At
first, she and I would giggle at each other. After the second or 3rd frame, she
said in a sassy tone, "I am going to out-model you," and I was like, "OK, you'
re on." So we go at it, photo after photo after photo, when Jay said it was our
last photo, I got into my pose. Tahlia then jumps off the prop and comes over
and pulls on my dress and says, "I have a question, can I hug you for this las
t picture?" I was like, "Of course, Sweetie!" and I gave her the biggest hug an
d I had the biggest smile on my face. It made everything that was so negative j
ust go away!
