America's Next Top Model 14's Krista White spoke to Reality TV Games about
winning the competition, her plans and much more...
**************************************************
Where are you today?
I am in [my hometown Pine Bluff], Arkansas visiting my family... I flew in
from New York late Friday / early Saturday and landed at about 1 AM. (Where
do you live?) I live in Vegas, I just came to Arkansas to visit my family and
do promotions for the show... it's my first time coming home since I have
been on the show. (You work in retail, right?) I was a retail manager at Max
Rave, it is owned by Max Azria who owns BCBG, Herve Leger and Max Rave
stores, he has some 352 stores in the United States. (Are you still working
there?) No. (When did you move to Las Vegas?) I moved from Arkansas to Vegas
about two and a half years ago, I got a modeling contract with an agency in
LA and they told me that I had to be closer to the agency and my biological
dad lives in Vegas, so I moved there because LA is only about a four hour
drive from Vegas.
What kind of work did you do with the agency?
Things with that agency just went wrong, they just never worked out... I was
with them for a year and I think that the only thing that I got out of them
was my book and my comp cards. (Oh I am sorry to hear that but I guess that
things worked out in its own way.) Yes, it worked out in its own way and it
was a learning process, it is something that you have to go through and learn
from it, so I am OK with it. (When you got the offer from the agency, did you
think about it or were you so excited to get signed that just went along?) I
guess I didn't really think about it much because I was in Arkansas and I
went to the Pro-Scout modeling convention - there aren't really modeling
agencies in Arkansas that could take me where I wanted to go so when the
convention came to Arkansas I was like, "Oh I have to go to that." What
happens is that they introduce you to different agencies and the people who
work for or were scouting for those agencies... there were about fifty
agencies there from all over and forty-one were interested in me and wanted
to talk to me about their agencies and maybe join their agency. (Were any of
the agencies that were interested in you ones with recognizable names?) Yes,
Ford was interested and also three different offices of Elite, so yeah, there
were a couple of big names there. [Later on] I went to visit my dad and while
I was out there I wanted to go visit some of the agencies that I [came in
contact with at the convention], one agency told me that they could take my
career to the next level and that they were really going to babysit my
career. I really believed what they said, but that did not exactly happen
exactly... (chuckle). (Did you learn anything from the experience that other
aspiring models can learn from?) I would say do your research, I was really
excited to be a model because I had been chasing my dream for so long and
when I met with a couple of agencies in LA everything sounded like cakes and
pies, everything sounded great and I was like "OK, I want a slice." [I
recommend that you] actually go home and think about it, don't sign anything
on the spot, have people look over [the paperwork], look the agency up online
- Google is amazing, google that sight and everything [about that agency] may
come up. And another thing, you want to sit down and talk to the president of
the company, I did not get that chance. Ask questions, you always want to ask
questions.
What is your ethnicity?
African-American. (Height?) 5'9 1/2 - I hit my growth spurt in the fifth
grade, I just towered over everybody... I was awkward, I could rest my elbows
on everybody's head, it was crazy. (Age?) I am twenty-five now, I was twenty
four on the show and the day the show wrapped, I turned twenty five. (So are
you sure you are twenty-five and not fifty-two?) No... no... I know fashion
industry is obsessed with youth and I knew that was going to be a problem
going into this thing and with me being the oldest girl at 24, there would be
comments like, "she's too old... she's 52... 53 years old!" I don't really
have an issue with it because in the house a lot of the girls were twenty-two
and twenty-three, there were only two or three eighteen / nineteen year olds,
so I was only a year or two older... we were all in high school at the same
time, they were in the tenth grade when I was in the twelfth. (I'll admit
that I made a joke or comment or two about your age.) Oh no problem!
Did you apply for season one of Top Model?
No it was after season one... and there was a girl from Arkansas on the show,
her name is Kesse and when I saw her, I was like, "OK, I can do this... I am
doing this..." I had just graduated from high school... I ended up applying
twelve times. (Which cycles did you make it the furthest?) Actually, this is
the furthest I ever made it, when you go to an open call, you go in and there
is one single camera, and they wrap [a group of applicants] around the room
and you go up to the camera and you say your name, age, height and weight,
after that they take maybe three or four girls out of that group and they
come back the next day. You then come back the next day and film a tape for
Tyra, it's all about your personality, who you are, what you have gone
through, that type of deal. That tape gets sent to Tyra and she picks the
group of girls that she wants to come out to LA. I never made it past that
first call where you said your name, age, height and weight until this cycle.
What was your favorite photo shoot?
My favorite photo shoot was the hair one, that is when things turned around
for me. I looked at myself in the mirror and when I saw the hair and makeup
and I thought, "oh gosh, I look like Grace Jones(!), OK I am going to go out
there and invite her in." I went out there and I did my Grace Jones thing and
it worked out for me. (Favorite challenge?) My favorite challenge was the one
where we walked the runway in front of the drag queens. It was a lot more
honest, they did not know who we were, they did not know our personalities,
all they can do was rate us on our walk, it was very honest. (How long did it
take for you to perfect that turn?) It took a long time to perfect the
mannequin turn, actually that was something they did as a challenge [on Top
Model] in cycle 6. After I saw it I tried to do it, it was difficult and I
kept trying until I learned how to do it, so for the challenge they wanted to
see personality and I was like, "I am going to do the turn and I went out
there and it happened. I was praying that I would not fall over or trip on
the carpet, because that would be embarrassing.
How was it doing the photo shoot with your mother and step father?
It was fun, we all had such a good time, it was great to be with my family...
for my mom to get on a flight to New Zealand... my mom doesn't even like to
go out in the rain, so for her to fly all the way to New Zealand was just
mind-blowing to me! They got to see the culture and the same things that I
was seeing, it is just crazy... I still talk about that.(In the family
photos, your stepfather outsmized you, your mother and Tyra, did you all know
that he was working it on the set?) No, we did not even know because he was
so nervous, he was sweating so badly that we kept stopping so that they could
pat his head, so we did not know. (I thought the family photo shoot was a
nice surprise, also after all this time it is rare for Top Model to actually
surprise the people.) It was a surprise to us too, we weren't expecting it...
[When we found out that it was a family photo shoot] me and Raina were like,
"OK we are going to play family and Tyra is going to be the auntie," and when
they said that someone else was going to be there we thought it was going to
be Tyra's mother and her mom was going to come down the stairs. When I saw my
mom and dad, I just ran up the stairs, I was in tears because I am really
close to my family, we talk all the time. I have the type of family where we
have movie nights, when I come home tired I lie across their bed with them
and eat popcorn, we sit there and laugh... I come from a very joking and fun
family, that is why I was such a character on the show with my jokes because
that's where I come from. It's just warm, you just know that the love is
there I can't explain it. (So it's your mom, stepdad and two sisters.) Yes.
Once you made it to New Zealand, did you think that you could win?
I never thought that I am going to win this. I kept saying in the back of my
mind, you gotta keep telling yourself, "you gotta do this... you wanna win
this... you want this..." but there is still the realization that I may not
get it. I never thought for one moment that I would win this or even be in
the top two, even after winning best photo, but I knew that there was always
a chance that I would go home because it was down to the wire and the best
girls were in the Top Five / Top Six. When everyone's picture comes up, we
all look great... unique, but there is also something different that could
put you in the bottom, so I never thought that I was taking this home. (Who
did you think would win?) Even going into the Final 2, Raina was my first
choice, that goes back to the beginning of the show... there's always a few
that you have to watch out for... I knew she was great, I saw something in
her at casting, I was like, "that face, that face, that face." Her face is
interesting, you cannot deny her that face, it's beautiful. She is more
versatile, she can go commercial and I think that she can go high fashion,
she will just have to work it, but I definitely think that she can achieve
it. Going into the Final 2, I was like, "there is no way in heck that I am
going to win this over her," I prepared myself to be runner up, so when Tyra
said my name and my picture came up, I looked at [Raina] and I looked at Tyra
and I looked back at the picture because I could have sworn they said her
name. Raina was one of my secret faves, she made me nervous... she was great.
Who are your favorite models?
I love Jourdan Dunne and Chanel Iman and I love what they are doing with
their careers, especially Chanel Iman because you see her in Express,
Victoria's Secret and she does high fashion stuff, that is someone that I
would model my career after. From [previous] generations, Tyra Banks, Kimora
Lee Simmons and Naomi Campbell, they are people that I really admire because
they went from supermodels to business women.
Who are your favorite designers?
For [classic] looks, I like Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren because I like the
preppy look and cut... if I could walk for anyone, I would break down if I
could do a Balenciaga show or a Salvatore Ferragamo show, I like haute
couture, that extreme out of the box look that you can't wear every day, you
can only wear it on special occasions and sometimes not even then, if I could
do those two I would be so excited... I love high fashion, the clothes are so
beautifully constructed... I want to walk a runway with those dresses on...
if I did a Valentino show... I would get sick to my stomach.
Top Model alums have done well, but no one has quite broken into that level
yet.
Right and I think that I am just the person to do that, I have so much drive
in me and I like breaking down barriers and proving people wrong - that a Top
Model can't be a top model. But Top Model girls are actually doing great,
Danielle did a campaign for Victoria's Secret Pink... she is signed with
Click Models now, she has done a lot of stuff. Look at Fatima, she did not
win, she was in the Top 5 and she did a campaign for DKNY.
Do you think that your look will fit into the commercial market?
Probably not... I think that it's something that I am going to have to learn
and grasp, I kinda struggle with it but I felt comfortable after I shot my
Seventeen cover, I was like, that cover looks great, I think that I can
actually cross into the commercial market. I know that I can be commercial,
but it is something that I am going to have to work hard at doing to master
because I always felt that I was high fashion... I worked on high fashion
posing, but I definitely want to do commercial. I want to do commercial and
high fashion modeling, I want to show that Tyra develops great people... that
great people do come out of [the America's Next Top Model experience].
Have you shot your Seventeen editorial?
Yes I shot the cover and the spread, it should be out the second or third
week of June, I am excited about it. I want to do a lot of things, I have
talked to the agency and they are trying to figure out what is the better
market for me - New York or LA, especially because I want to do a lot of
media and I want to motivate young girls. (later) In about two weeks I am
going to New York and I am going to start building my book, I think by then
they will know where they want to place me, I don't know if it will be LA or
New York but I do know that I have to move. (You're doing something with Max
Azria, right?) I am doing [Max Rave's] back-to-school campaign, it comes out
in August... I will be in their [352 stores throughout the United States] and
on their website. I am excited about it because I will also have a campaign
under my belt and it can go in my book for people to see and its a commercial
gig... this is just the beginning, I still feel humble, like my normal self,
, I feel like the same old Krista, I don't feel like a star - this is the the
time that my career really begins and I need to hit the ground running, I am
excited and I am ready to run with it!
What do you mean when you say that you want to motivate and inspire young
girls?
I just want them to know that they do not have to give up on their dream.
Nowadays, young people try something and maybe after the third time they are
like I am not trying that again - if it is something that you really want to
do, keep going for it, you are going to get nos but the nos are going to get
you to the gift, anything you want in life is a fight, it's a struggle. You
are going to get broken down and get to your lowest moment but when you get
to that win you are going to appreciate it so much more because of all that
you had to go through to get to there,
It sounds like you have other career interests besides modeling?
I want to work on TV, you know Tyra is leaving her talk show and [when that
happens], there will be nothing for young people to watch, Tyra talked about
those things that no one else talked about... that parents are not touching
on and (young people) don't have a clue about it... I would like to venture
into the talk show thing... and hosting jobs and appearances. I also want to
have my own fashion line and I want to do makeup, I want to do products that
are good for your skin and looks good for your face.
Raina mentioned that Andre Leon Talley gave the two of you his contact
information, how do you see yourself using him?
That was amazing... I just wanted to pass out and faint! He is so influential
in the industry, working for Vogue... he has lunch with the biggest designers
and he talks to them and he knows their ins and outs, what they like and what
they are looking for and where their line is going and what is coming up for
the spring collections. After the final show he gave us his information, he
was like, "call me... contact me... I want to follow you girls, I want to
make sure that you [are knowledgeable] and get the right thing out of the
industry." It wasn't a gimmick and he didn't have any favorites because he
gave it to both off us, he just really wants to help us blossom, it really
tells you what kind of person that he is, he is down to earth and he really
wants us to do well in the industry, it's awesome. I am kinda nervous because
you just don't want to call him up and be like, "Andre, it's me... um..."
I've emailed him here and there, that kind of stuff. (Have you thought of
ways that you can use him?) I don't think that he is going to go, "here is
Diane von Furstenberg's number, call her," he is not going to do that, I
think that it will be more like, "these are the kind of people who are
looking for the look that you have, so put your book together and put on your
fashion outfit and go up and see this person," so that is what I think he is
going to do... I don't think he is going to be passing us his numbers.
Who were your closest friends in the house? Who have you kept in touch with?
I was closest to Angelea, I know that towards the end of the show things
kinda got weird between us but she was one of my best friends and we still
talk every day. I was close to Alex... and Tati... I still talk to them. I
was close to Anslee, I love Anslee and I plan to contact her [soon]... I did
not stay in contact with a lot of the girls because I did not want them to
question me about where I placed because I kinda suck at the lying thing, if
someone asked me, "did you win(?)" I would probably be smiling and laughing,
I would be like, "uh no" (giggle).
What few words pop in your mind about...
Jay Manuel - He is funny... he is hard core; he pushes us to our extreme
because he wants us to do our best.
J Alexander - He is hilarious, he always makes you feel great, even when he
gives you your critique, he does it in a way that doesn't hurt your feelings,
instead you learn from it, he really nurtures you.
Andre Leon Talley - He is the best, he is fu-nny, funny, funny, funny. He
does not beat around the bush, if you looked a mess, he said you looked a
mess; if you looked adorable and cute, he said that, he was very honest.
Nigel - Cute and adorable, straight to the point, he also doesn't beat around
the bush... he tells it like it is. Nigel wants us all to do well, he had a
lot of good things to say about all of us.
Tyra - Tyra is an inspiration, the things that she did in our lives and the
things that we learned from her. She is very nurturing, she has the big
sister thing... the homegirl thing, she did not belittle us or try to make us
feel unsure about ourselves, she wanted to motivate us and make sure that we
were doing out best.
Are you on Facebook, Twitter or some other social network / blog?
I am on Facebook, I have my regular Facebook page and my Facebook Fanpage,
the regular page is the one that I check the most. I stay in contact and talk
one-on-one with people, it is the way I talk to the fans. I am getting on
Twitter, I am really nervous because I heard how addictive it is, you want to
Twitter everything, "I am eating cereal!" and "I am drinking milk!" I am
trying to be focused and build my career, I don't want to be stuck on my
phone 24-7 and have people think that I am not focused.

Is there anything that you would like to say to your fans?
Thank you(!), thank you to all my fans who have watched me from the beginning
and went along with me and the new ones who came along in the middle... I
really, really appreciate it. I think [the fans] are awesome, they hit me up
on Facebook and I just want to thank them for rooting me on and having
conversations with me, I really appreciate it more than they will ever know.
Thank you Krista!

beautifully constructed...
