Reality TV Games participated in a post-elimination conference call with
America Next Top Model 14's Alasia Ballard.
**************************************************
What is your hometown?
Marietta, Georgia. (age?) Eighteen. (height?) About 5'11" and growing.
(ethnicity?) African American and Native American (Blackfoot).
How did you come to be cast on Top Model?
I am still in high school and a friend at my school was pressing me to try
out for the show and she found out when the casting call in Atlanta was and I
went and they chose me (laughs). I never had an opportunity to try out before
- I was too young so when I had the chance, I went for it. (Interesting,
there have not been a lot of girls cast for the show while they were still in
high school.) Yeah, I think most girls wait until they graduate... I didn't
want to give up on an opportunity like that because I didn't know when the
next casting call for Atlanta would be or anything like that. (Did you have
to drop out?) I was only taking two required classes last semester, so I
dropped those classes and came back this semester and picked those two up
along with the last required class that I had to take.
Didn't you tell your teachers a different story about your absence?
I told them that I was going to live with my uncle in New York [and when I
returned], they were like, "oh, we didn't know you were coming back." One
teacher knew already because in order to leave I had to tell one teacher and
when she found out that the promo was on the internet she went and told
everybody and then all the teachers were coming up to me saying, "oh Alasia,
that's where you went!"
How did your interest in modeling develop?
I realized that I wanted to model when I was watching Tyra's retirement show
when she hung up her Victoria's Secret wings. I said to myself, "I want those
wings(!)," that was like my goal... so that is when I really started wanting
to model. I went to a few people but they wanted a lot of money and it was
money that we did not have, there was no way that I could pay $1000 plus I
had people telling me that if they want you to pay, then you shouldn't do it,
so I just focused on school after that.
Had you watched Top Model before?
I watched a few seasons before, I watched the season with Eva and I watched
last season. I kinda fell off for a while because I go to church on
Wednesdays. (What is your favorite ANTM cycle?) Cycle 3, I really got into
the petite season, that is my favorite season too. (Who are your favorite
ANTM competitors?) Nicole (Cycle 13), Danielle (Cycle 6), and Bianca (Cycle
9).
Why did you wear a wig to casting?
The wig actually started about a month before I went to the casting.
Initially I just wanted to see what I would look like with short hair and I
wore it on the first day of school and people were like, "Oh my gosh, did you
cut your hair?" I figured that I could pull a senior prank and wear it for a
couple of months and it was during those two months when I went to the [Top
Model] casting and I thought that people from my school would be there so I
wore it to the casting call.
How was it like being in New York?
New York is so different from what I am used to, we don't have tall buildings
like that and it's like everyone is on the go. I really liked it though, I am
so used to the small country kind of, but I liked the rush. I wish I had the
opportunity to explore... get out and walk around, I didn't get a chance to
see as much as I wanted... it's not safe to let us out, but I really liked
just being there. (How did you like living in the Top Model house?) We did
have our fun times but I honestly felt like I was at work all the time. (what
did you do to keep yourself busy?) I wrote poetry and drew.
How did you like the overseas location?
It was so lovely, everything was beautiful and the people were all really
nice.
How did you prepare for your photo shoots mentally?
My main focus was to calm down, in pictures you can see any emotion, if you
feel angry, you can see anger, if you're nervous, you can see that. So the
main thing I tried to do before a photo shoot to calm my nerves... take a
deep breath and just calm down.
Who were your closest friends in the house?
Angelea and Gabi. (Who have you kept in touch with?) I talk to Gabi almost
every day and Angelea like every other day because she works and has a
[different] schedule.
Now that you are out of the competition, who do you think should win?
Hmmm, my choice is between Alex and Angelea... Alex is very relateable, I
feel the same way with Angelea, there's something that they can teach younger
girls. I feel like they have really good personalities, they're really nice
and really sweet - I think that if someone came up to them and asked for an
autograph they would be very friendly and converse with them. I think that
they could handle the pressure of being America's Next Top Model.
How did you feel having Andre Leon Talley on the judges panel?
At first I did not know how to feel? I knew like all of the other judges that
he was going to tell the truth... say what he needed to say, so I really
didn't know how to feel at first but I really love Andre... I love all of the
judges... I really love Andre Leon Talley.
Some felt that Andre Leon Talley favored you, is that the correct perception?
Maybe because I am Captain Clueless... when I was there I did not know that
he liked me. A few girls, like two girls made a comment about it, "oh yeah,
he likes you." (What was it about you that you think he responded to?) I
think that he sees something in me that I have yet to find... that I have not
found yet. I don't think that he was playing favorites, maybe he was
attracted to something in my spirit or something like that.
What few words pop in your mind about...
Jay Manuel - Strictly business, he knows the industry.
J Alexander - He has a story to tell... I can learn a lot from him.
Andre Leon Talley - Fabulous... I love him and I hope I get to see him again.
Thank you Andre!
Nigel - Why is he bald?
Tyra - I love her, she is so gorgeous.... a beautiful person and she is NOT
mean at all. Thank you, Tyra!
Which judge (or judges) do you think supported you the most?
Andre Leon Talley surely.
Do you have a favorite photographer?
Sarah Silver is my favorite photographer, she really communicated with her
models.
Overall, do you think that you were portrayed fairly?
I think everyone was portrayed fairly. I think I was portrayed as myself and
you always knew how I was feeling. If I did not care for someone, I usually
did not talk to them.
How do you feel about your makeover?
There really was not much done, they really just washed it and curled it...
but I really did like my makeover, I loved my makeover hair(!)... it was
really bouncy and curly. My hair is not like that right now, I couldn't
maintain it because I did not have that type of curling iron, but I do have
something similar. (Did they perm [relax] your hair?) No I haven't had a perm
in like two years, I don't want to perm my hair anymore because I don't want
to damage it, it was really damaged when I was perming it, the ends were
really damaged, my hair has grown back, my hair grows faster now because I
don't perm it.
Why were you constantly fighting in the house?
Oh my gosh... OK... I am eighteen years old and I felt like they were picking
on me and singling me out because of my age. I am not the type of person to
judge somebody... I only judge people off of their actions. I think that
sometimes they stepped completely out of line, it was really cut throat in
there. (How does it feel to see those really heated moments with the other
girls?) It's really kinda funny to me, I hate to say that. I usually go back
and apologize to them afterwards... I don't like to go off like that but I
felt like if I was like, "OK" they are going to keep doing it. I don't like
being mean, but I felt extremely disrespected. It's entertaining I guess.
(later) There are some girls that just don't know when to stop... it's like
you sit there and you know that they are pushing your buttons and you ask
them to stop pushing your buttons but they just keep on pushing them. (later)
I have never in my life experienced people who do that so that was brand new
to me, usually people say little stuff and I am like"whatever" but they
crossed the line and kept on walking when they said some of the things that
they said, that is why I went off the way that I did. I don't usually react
the way that I did, I am usually the bigger person but I never had anything
that cutthroat come at me before. Now if it were to happen again I would
react differently because I have experienced it and I know how to handle
things like that now... it was my decision to react that way.
Did you and the other girls feel the need to keep drama going in order to
stay on the show?
For the whole time that I was there I never felt the need to start drama, I
think that other girls did... people talk you know [and certain things] get
knocked into your head and you start to live it... "maybe if I do this or
maybe if I do that, it will keep me on the show," but for me personally I
never felt a need to start drama.
What was your favorite photo shoot?
My favorite photo shoot was the vampire photo shoot. I liked the gore, I
liked the bath tub full of blood... I liked not being able to see and I liked
working with a guy because when you are in a house full of females we rarely
get to be around guys who you could actually interact with. (Were you nervous
doing the nude shoot?) Yeah, I was really nervous about that, I mean with the
article I got... I was basically completely naked. (laughs) It was really
awkward for me, I had never been naked in front of people before... I never
experience that before and there were a whole bunch of guys around I was
like, "Oh my gosh, a little nervous here... really nervous!" Who does that on
a regular basis other than those who work in the industry? (favorite
challenge?) The Cover Girl challenge, I like to be in front of people. (least
favorite challenge?) The Tinsley Mortimer challenge.
Do you know what the designers at your go sees in New Zealand thought of you
or how many jobs you booked?
No they did not tell me, that was part of the penalty of being late. After
the last go see, why did you go back to get your map, why didn't you just
tell the cab driver to take you to the agency? The cab driver could not tell
us [how to get to places], we had to tell them... we had to navigate them
there. If I could have just told him to take me there, I definitely would
have (laughs).
Why did you wear that silver bathing suit to panel?
I am obsessed with printed t-shirts, all of my clothes are printed t-shirts -
they have some kind of design on them - you can't wear anything with a logo
on it or a picture on it or a cartoon character because they have to pay
royalties for that stuff, they take it from you and they give it back to you
after you go home or whatnot. I don't have a large wardrobe, I had lots of
dresses and sweaters and like two plain t-shirts. I had nothing to wear [to
panel] and I was like, "uh-oh!"... I was trying to get away with it by
putting a jacket over it, but (laughs) that didn't work out very well.
Who taught you how to walk?
My cousin Marcus... he passed away a few months ago... and he was really into
drag and stuff like that, so he inspired my walk a little bit, he had a
[great] walk, he was almost right there next to Miss J... he had a really
fierce walk... whenever I walk I would think of him and try to do my best.
What have you been doing since the show and what are your plans?
I am actually waiting for my portfolio and I am waiting to graduate, so right
now I am enjoying my senior year... I graduate May 22nd, graduation is very
important to me, I mean my career is too, but I need to graduate. After May
22nd I don't have to do anything else and I am going at the industry full
force. Since I've been home I have developed such a passion for this and I
really want it so I am going at it full force.
Are you going to relocate?
I will go anywhere that the business takes me: Paris,Tokyo, Milan, Rome,
Africa, New York, L.A., wherever I need to go to get the job done. Right now
I am going to start in Atlanta because that is the easiest thing for me to do
because I don't really have enough money to get my own apartment, especially
in New York. I am gonna find an agency first and from there they are going to
tell me where to go.
What type of modeling appeals to you - runway, high fashion editorial,
catalog, commercial, etc.?
I am interested in it all, but I really like runway and commercial or even a
Victoria's Secret model. I am also interested in catalog... I would love to
do [TV] commercials as well. I'm really interested in everything, I am brand
new to this and I want to go at it full force... I wouldn't turn anything
down. (Are there designers / companies that you would like to work for in the
future?) Kira Plastinina, Michael Kors, Christian Lacroix, John Gilliano,
Karl Lagerfeld, Sonia Rykiel, Donatella Versace, Carolina Herrera, Rei
Kawakubo, Vivienne Westwood, Louis Vuitton, Juicy Couture and Teen Vogue just
to name a few!
Who are your favorite designers?
I feel every designer has that something about their designs that makes them
unique and there is a piece of every designer that I am just obsessed with.
Kira Platinina is my favorite, first and foremost she's young, she's in my
age group - she's like seventeen or eighteen years old, her designs are like
girly and feminine and I am really attracted to them... I am attracted to
color and pink, really girly stuff. She's on the top... also, Michael Kors,
Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, and Louis Vuitton. (You mentioned liking Louis
Vuitton's bags on the show). I really favor [Louis Vuitton's] handbags and
wallets... his print and especially the color that he uses... I own like two
of them.
Who are your favorite non-ANTM models?
Chanel Iman, I love that girl and she is from Atlanta. Alek Wek, Dji Dieng,
her legs are amazing! Tyra Banks of course, she is extremely versatile. Naomi
Campbell.
What is your favorite TV show?
I like the History and Science channels. I love to watch cartoons but my
favorite ones no longer come on T.V. I watch movies most of the time. Disney
is my favorite. Weird right? (What is on your i-pod?) Trey Songz, Usher,
Travis Porter, Christian and '90s RnB.
Modeling is a tough business, do you think that you are strong enough and
mature enough for it?
I do think I am mature enough to handle this industry, I think that I have
matured a lot since the show and I matured a lot because I was on the show. I
never lived outside of Marietta, Georgia but I got a chance to be outside of
that box and experience a whole new world of different things and I matured a
lot. You learn things in life and I learned that you can't let people get to
you and you can't let people ruin your day, I have a thousand reasons to
smile.
Are you on Facebook, Twitter or some other social network / blog?
I just recently started a fan page on Facebook. Alasia's Fan Page.
Is there anything that you would like to say to your fans?
I love my fans. Thank you so much, I appreciate the support. Team Alasia!!!!
Thank you Alasia!
