Next Top Model 14's Angelea Preston.
**************************************************
How tall are you?
5'11" (age?) Twenty-three. (ethnicity?) My mother is Italian and my father is
black; I have a little bit of Puerto Rican on my dad's side... I am
multi-racial, I can be anything, people mistake me for Puerto Rican, Arabian,
everything under the sun. (When I saw you on the show I wondered if you had
Italian roots, Russian was my other guess.) Yes, yes it's the Italian
attitude. (Are your parents or grandparents immigrants?) My mom was born in
Buffalo but my grandparents were immigrants, they were from Calabria in the
southern part of Italy. (later) I speak a little Italian, the basics; I can
speak Spanish really well, I took it in high school and I got like a 96 on
the exam. I would like to get back into speaking Spanish because I think that
I will do really well in the Spanish market, a lot of people think that I am
straight Puerto Rican, I just have that look!
Of course we all know you are from Buffalo, did you grow up there?
Yes, born and raised. (Are you there now? Are you working or in school?) Yes,
I am in Buffalo now, I work at a call center, we schedule appointments for [a
technical support group].
When you were not selected for Cycle 12, did the show ask you try out again
or did you do that on your own?
When they did not pick me I told Tyra that I am coming back - I saw Jaslene
come back and I saw Marvita and Tiffany came back, I knew that if I tried
again and they saw improvement in me that I would be able to come back. What
happen was when Cycle 12 premiered [they told me to come to New York to be on
The Tyra Show] because Tyra liked me so much. She told me then that she
wanted me to come back and audition again and that I needed to work on how I
dealt with my anger; she gave me this paper with these anger management
classes on it and told me to look into it so that I would have my head right
when I auditioned for Cycle 14.
What were they concerned about, did they think that you were going to punch
someone?
Like honestly I know my temper I would never hit anybody, but I don't think
that they wanted to take any chances because they felt that it could have
gotten to that point. I am not so angry that I would be so stupid to be like,
"this girl made me so mad angry I am going to punch her in the face," that is
not me at all. I would not be so stupid as to hit someone, this is my dream.
I am not going to just go flying off the handle, that is not me I am not that
type of person. Still I think that they were concerned with how I would speak
and come off like I am going to hit you if you don't get out of my face and
stuff like that, so I think that they were concerned, but honestly... please,
I fought probably like three times in my life, I mean come on now.
Why do you use the word bitch so much, especially when speaking directly to
people?
(Laughs) When I noticed it on TV... it was like I was saying bitch every
other word, I was like "oh my gosh(!)," but like where I am from, when I say
the word bitch it's not a derogatory term, it's like that Missy Elliott song
"She's a Bitch," I use it as a kind of term of endearment and the people
around me... not everybody understands that, but like if you are talking to
your homegirl, case in point me and Krista, when we talked to each other, we
would be like, "Aw, bitch please," or "what are you doing, bitch?" I do think
that bitch is used in a demeaning way, but I didn't mean to use it in a
demeaning way. I would just be like (breezy tone) "bitch please" to my
homegirl, now if you made me mad, then you got (not so friendly tone) "bitch
please," so it kinda like a two way street it can be a term of endearment for
your homegirl and friends but if someone pissed you off then it is viewed in
a different way. (Yeah, because I don't think that you meant it as a term of
endearment to Brenda?) Oh no... no! (laughs) Yeah that was not a term of
endearment for Brenda, I think that people need to realize that when you call
someone uneducated and rude that is unfair as well and people need to
understand that that's why I called her a bitch because she called me
uneducated that's derogatory too, because you are saying that just because I
talk the way that I do, you are assuming that I am uneducated and that is so
far from the truth. As I said on the show, I went to a Redbook Top 150 school
and I do know worldly things, I went to college, I am a history buff, I know
a lot of things but at the same time I am not going to stop talking how I
talk because that is not who I am like, I am not going to get on the show and
start saying (affected tone) "everything is just fantastic and high five and
toodles to you(!)," like that is not how I talk, so I am not going to sit up
there and act like something that I am not.
You mentioned that this has been your dream, did you model prior to the show?
I did not have any experience in modeling, it was something that I always
wanted to do but Buffalo does not have the market for it and I never had the
money to up and leave and go to New York City and go to an agency and be like
"well, here I am... sign me." I never had that type of money to do that and I
could have sent in my pictures but I felt like it was a dream and I felt like
I could not catch my dream because I was here - it seemed like modeling was
just a dream and that is all that it was going to be... that was my mindset.
What is is about Top Model that all of the sudden makes things so different?
I think what makes it different is that you are getting national exposure and
you get a contract right off the bat if you win - you are automatically
signed... automatically guaranteed work. Without the show it will be like me
just going on a whim, I could go to New York and maybe not get signed and
that will be the end of that but I also think that with the show it gave me
experience and it showed me a whole side of modeling that I never knew
existed - it was so in depth, I experienced everything that a true model does
and I think that this was the best thing that I could have done... I want it
so much more now than I did before. (On your last episode, Jay Manuel said
that if you did not win the competition that he was not sure that you would
pursue modeling, was he right to have that perception?) No, honestly when I
saw it, you should have seen my face girl, I was like, "What(??!!)," my jaw
dropped, I don't know where he got that perception... maybe it was the way
that I took his critiques because I did view some of his critiques as
negative, the reason I viewed his critiques negatively was because growing up
I was told all of this negative stuff, not for my own good but just because
people were just mean to me... just to belittle me and downgrade me and when
Jay gave me negative critiques I didn't see it as positive, I saw it as
something negative... but I should not have felt that way I should have taken
it as he wants to see me do better and he knows that I am capable of better,
it was constructive criticism and not the negative criticism that I
experienced growing up. When I saw that I was like "Really Jay??!!" I could
not believe that he said that... I can't believe that he thinks that about
me, I have always proved people wrong, I have done it all my life and it is
going to feel good to prove him wrong, it is going to feel real good because
I am pursuing it, I am doing what I have to do and I am taking baby steps and
the baby steps are going to turn into big steps I just have to keep on
working at it. (Do you think that this was enough of a lesson, because there
are people who will try to put you down - are you in the right place to deal
with that?) Girl listen I have been through so much stuff in my life both
good and bad... I have been through so much for a twenty three year old and I
am still living and I am still breathing. If I tell you half of the things
that I have been through you would be like, "oh my God why aren't you in an
insane asylum... a mental institution" I am a soldier... I am a survivor... I
am a fighter, I know that it is a dog-eat-dog world in the modeling business
and I am ready for it. I think that who I am as a person is an inspiration to
girls, my story is, "Don't give up, work on what you need to work on and do
what you have to do and take whatever shots and scorn that are thrown at you
it and throw it right back and continue to just believe in yourself." I
believe in me and I know that I am going to be successful.
Who were your closest friends in the house?
Alex, Alasia, Jessica and Krista, those were the girls that I talked to the
most. I talked to Raina but not as much as the others and also Anslee... and
Tatianna, I talk to her now. I know that it may look like I didn't have any
friends except Krista, but you did not see that other side of me, the Angelea
that is cool and chill and cool to get along with.
Overall. do you think that you were portrayed fairly?
I said what I said and I did what I did... they needed someone to play the
bitch, you have the bitch every cycle and it just so happened to be me. I am
not as angry as I was portrayed... I did say things and I did do things but
at the same time whenever I was going off it was not because I was crazy in
the head or paranoid, it was because somebody in the house set me off,
somebody in the house said something and that got a reaction from me. I never
just went off of someone, just to go off. (I don't think it was said in the
RTVG interviews, but I read that you would just stare at people). I don't
know if it was Brenda who said it, I just love how people try to play the
innocent person, like "Oh I am just so innocent and I didn't do my dirt and
that [Angelea is] just crazy and is this bitch who goes around and looks at
people." First of all as a person you are entitled to look at whoever you
want to and do whatever you want to, I think that the incident that is being
referred to is when Brenda and I were in the kitchen... there was stuff that
Brenda was saying to me before that incident, I don't just go around looking
at people and just being evil, I looked at her that way because she made some
statements before that that were not shown on TV and that is why I looked at
her in that manner, because she initiated it... whatever.
What type of modeling appeals to you - runway, high fashion editorial,
catalog, commercial, etc.?
Ooo, I want do everything, I want to do runway, I want to model in Paris, in
Milan... I would like to do commercial modeling, fit modeling like where you
become the muse for the designer and you are strictly on call for them to do
the fittings for the runways, I would love to do that!
What are your plans?
I am going to New York to hopefully try and get signed. I would love to get
into TV and do some acting... I want to do everything!
Who are your favorite designers?
I love Alberta Ferretti, I love John Galliano and Marc Jacobs. It is so funny
because someone asked me before Alexander McQueen passed away who was my
favorite... I talked about how I love his rawness, he is so different, he
takes things to the edge. I love John Galliano because he does what he wants
to do, he doesn't care what anybody thinks he doesn't care about what's in or
what's hot, he does what he wants. I like Alexander Wang and Rachel Roy, and
I am not saying this because she was on the show, I knew who she was before
I'd seen her at the runway challenge, I just think that her clothes are so
sophisticated and I would just love to be her muse, I would love to be Rachel
Roy's muse.
Who are your favorite models?
Besides myself, I am just kidding, I know that is so corny. I just saw
something about Karlie Kloss, I like her. I love Coco Rocha, that is my
ultimate, I was watching this tape of her, I think it was on the New York Mag
website and she did like seventy-five poses in a minute. I was like, "Ooo I
would love to do that." I love her, I think she is beautiful, I liked when
she had fiery red hair, I know that some girls with red hair don't always
feel as attractive as girls with blond hair, but she just took it to another
level, like "I have fiery red hair and I am a fantastic supermodel and I am
all that."
Are you on Facebook, Twitter or some other social network / blog?
Response coming soon.
Is there anything that you would like to say to your fans?
Thank you for the love and support and you will be seeing me again. Honest to
God I really appreciate it and did not take anything for granted, and you'll
be seeing me on the runway and you'll probably be seeing me on TV.
Thank you Angelea!
