ANTM Cycle 18’s Mariah: Girls Were Smoking, Getting Drunk Before
Eliminations - Exclusive!
Tonight we’re in store for a brand new America's Next Top Model Cycle 18
(Cycle 18, Episode 3: "Cat Deeley"). So far, one Brit and one American have
gone home: Jasmia Robinson and Mariah, respectively. Mariah spoke exclusively
to Wetpaint Entertainment about what we didn’t see behind the scenes, who
the biggest troublemakers are, and who showed up to elimination hungover.
Wetpaint Entertainment: What was your reaction to being eliminated second?
Mariah: It was kind of a shocker to me, it was something that I hadn’t
expected whatsoever. I didn’t think that my picture was nearly as bad as a
couple of the other girls and I didn’t think it was my time to leave. But I
guess that’s just something that you kind of have to accept.
Is there anyone in particular who you think should have gone home instead of
you?
I wouldn’t point out the girls, I don’t think I can point out the girls
exactly, I just know there was definitely quite a few other choices that
could have gone home. Also, some things that had happened at the house, and
some of the girls who had not really wanted it in their heart to be America’
s Next Top Model. I think it was unfair to the girls who at heart really did
want it.
Who did you not get along with?
I didn’t take to Sophie [Sumner] very well, honestly, at all. Me and Sophie
didn’t really click too well. I wasn’t a fan of Sophie’s or Laura’s,
honestly. Me and Laura didn’t click too well either. Of course they don’t
show everything that goes on and the night before elimination [on Cycle 18,
Episode 2: “Kris Jenner”], quite a couple of the girls were drinking the
night before. The day of our elimination I noticed Sophie was really sick.
She was sick and stuff on the day that I happened to get eliminated. I was a
little sour on that. Why would you want to eliminate someone who you know has
such a passion for creating change and empowering young women and stuff? I
was one of the top three tallest girls in the entire competition. I’ve been
signed with Wilhelmina Models since I was 16, been modeling since age 15, I
felt like there were girls who weren’t in a position to be as great of a
role model to others.
What was going on that night?
On the next day you don’t basically go hungover to the elimination. There’s
quite a few of the girls on the show who couldn’t kick the habit of smoking.
I was trying to go to bed the night before, but they were popping a couple of
bottles in the British room, the party was going down.
Moving on, being Native American is very important to you.
Being the first Native American female [on ANTM] is so important to me. A lot
of people who have supported me and said nothing but words of encouragement
and congrats on being the first Native. A lot of them also felt it wasn’t my
time to go. A lot of my fans and I guess I would say my Native people were
pretty upset and said they weren’t going to watch the show anymore.
Do you think there will be a Native American supermodel in your lifetime?
That’s been my mission since age 15 and that’s what I’m working at. I feel
as if I’m kind of in the forefront right now, and going places in the
entertainment industry that Native Americans just haven’t gone before. That’
s my Number 1 goal right now. Something that they also didn’t show was
towards the end of the show after I’d gotten eliminated I was walking away
and Miss Tyra Banks herself stopped me and said “Mariah, you can be the
first Native American supermodel ever, just not America’s Next Top Model.”
I feel like if Tyra Banks told me something as amazing as that and if she
believes in me, then I have no other choice than to believe in myself.
How many days were you actually filming?
We were filming over a couple months.
Did going on ANTM help you in any way?
I enjoyed getting to know a couple of the girls. Me and Ky Ky. Kyle’s my
favorite, I love her so much. Me and her are just like little sisters or
something, me and Kyle and Seymone are pretty close, andEboni. So I wouldn’t
trade the experience for anything, getting to be at Universal Studios and
getting to meet Kris and Kylie Jenner. I’m glad I did it, but I would not do
it again, if that makes sense.
Was the house split between Team UK and Team USA?
Surprisingly no, the British girls had already been on BNTM before and they’
ve already had their first go-round at it and they already had sort of an
advantage because of that. There’s a couple of the American girls who got
along with the British girls a lot more than they did with the American
girls. At first, we were all really nice to each other, a lot of us were
getting along. I’m a very respectful person, I’m big on respect, so girls
that I didn’t like, I just tended to stay away from, but there was
definitely a few of them [I liked]. Alisha White is like the funniest girl I’
ve ever met in my life.
Who are you rooting for?
It’s between Seymone, Kyle or Candace. If I had to pick one, maybe I would
go for Seymone. I love Seymone with my heart. She’s an amazing girl, and she
didn’t have any modeling experience prior to the show. So that says a lot.
