Kelly Clarkson on Target for #1, The-Dream Also Debuting, Three 100k in Top
10?
March 11, 2009
Just look at it this way. Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
The stock market’s holding its own and there are three six-figure sales
totals in next week’s Top 10 on the authoritative, HITS Top 50 Album chart.
We haven’t seen that since 2008. In fact, we’ve only had one week this year
with even two titles selling more than 100k.
But enough of the bad news...
RCA/RMG’s Idol alum and female empowerment role model Kelly Clarkson should
unseat this week’s champs U2 with her new album, All That I Needed, and
current iPod staple, “My Life Would Suck Without You,” which we interpret
as her tribute to this very website. With a slew of TV appearances this week,
including American Idol tonight and Saturday Night Live unh, um, Saturday
night, her first album is currently looking on target to sell between
210-230k, but we reserve the right to hedge our bets based on how the tubular
explosion plays out.
Based on one-day sales figures from those retailers not liquidating their
inventory, Def Jam’s The-Dream seems set for a nice sales week between
125-150k for his Love vs Money, as he obviously decides on the latter. He’s
currently jamming the airwaves with “My Love,” a duet with Mariah Carey.
Capitol soul man J. Holiday debuts with a not-bad total of 60-65k for Round
2, the follow-up to his Grammy-nominated debut, which produced the hit “Bed,
”while New Found Glory makes its Epitaph bow with 25-30k for Not Without a
Fight, the Florida emo rockers’ sixth album and first after splitting
Geffen.
Interscope’s ex-Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell parlays his collab with
Timbaland into a 20-25k debut for Scream, his third solo album and first for
the producer’s Mosley Music Group imprint.
Finally, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ latest for Interscope, It's Blitz!, whose
release date was moved up to a digital exclusive after massive Internet
leaks, will garner 14-16k, which is indicative of the power of online sales
at this point in time.
The market was up 2% this week vs. last week, down 8% vs. same week last year
and down 11% year to date. Brother, can you spare a paying trade journalism
gig?
