其實美國的影評沒有普遍差，而是普遍給中上評價。
但其實他們的意見蠻一至的，光用文化不同/他們看不懂來帶過有點敷衍。
以下幾篇大概能代表一下美國影評的看法，都是有頭有臉的專業主流媒體。
TV Guide是目前唯一給滿分的專業影評。

認為整部片可比希區考克的經典"美人計"
其實國外影評制度真的很好，看過的專業影評真的都很專業，
他們都是看過張愛玲的原著才來評電影的。
這篇認為李安掌握原著的精隨，在每個細節都表現的很好。
然後這部片對於情慾的坦白直接，是斷背山比不上的。

看法大多是美國影評所認為的。
片子的熱情不夠，太過保守所以情沒出來，
導致片子並不是特別感人。
覺得片子太長，麻將戲很拖時間，雖然感覺的出來有意義，
但看久了還是顯得不耐。
另外很難想像看似清純害羞的王佳芝可以搖身一變為世故成熟的情婦。
然後不像斷背山，在Jack死後Ennis感情留下空白，只剩襯衫可以慰藉。
色，戒並沒有類似的情感依歸，讓人更不懂王佳芝究竟為何如此選擇?

覺得這部片對西方觀眾來說應該贏不了太多同理心。
舉例來說在麻將桌上特寫了很多手部動作來表示權力跟屈服，
這點可能就不會被看出來。
覺得利用麻將戲來倒敘讓人搞不太懂時空。
認為雖然湯唯的表現極優，
但還是無法彌補王佳芝的情感以及意圖不明的空洞，劇本沒有給湯唯這部份來發揮。
認為這部片如果設定小品而非史詩格局；順序而非倒敘；
多給人物一些背景交代而非在房間裡幹的事，這部片會好很多。
