上週書蟲女孩本來想在出國前再趕出一篇看影集學英文，讓大家在連假期間可以輕鬆學英
文，結果不幸得了重感冒，無法提前寫文章，只好和在粉絲專頁跟大家分享長灘島的美景

現在摩登家庭第七季已經拍攝完畢，如果是從以前追到現在的朋友們一定對這家人的個性
都有很深的了解。雖然這部影集每集之間沒有強烈的連結（就算漏看某一集也不會看不懂
），但其實每一集都些微呈現出每個人不同的個性與彼此之間的關係，這一集算是很直接
地描繪出 Claire 和 Gloria 兩人之間的心結。在這邊我也發現一件蠻有趣的現象，在亞
洲家庭文化中，如果家人之間有過節，常常避而不談，就像 Jay 在劇中提的 “Just
sweep it under the rug”，事情過了就算了，但這一集中 Claire 和 Gloria 把話講開
之後，意外得到了皆大歡喜的結局，這也是我覺得看美國影集中的意外收穫，可以從很多
情況中去了解中西文化的差異，這種小知識真的只有透過影集才能最直接的瞭解呀！
spike the ball:
to powerfully throw an American football down on the ground to celebrate a
touchdown (美式足球中的觸地得分).
Mitch: Please don’t spike our baby.
在 Mitch 說這句話之前，Cam 說了一連串美式足球的得分過程，而 Mitch 這句話的意思
是要 Cam 不要把他們的女兒當美式足球一樣往地上砸。
fountain pens(n.): 自來水鋼筆
antique (adj.) antique furniture , jewelry etc is old and often valuable.古董
的
Cam: I collect antique fountain pens.

menace (n.):討厭鬼／麻煩精
a person, especially a child , who is annoying or causes trouble.
Phil: kid’s a menace.
sweep under the rug:
避而不談以免衍生其他麻煩（單就字面意義就是把東西往地毯下掃，眼不見為淨）
to avoid discussing or dealing with something negative or troubling
Jay: Just sweep it under the rug.
pageantry (n.):（華麗的）排場
impressive ceremonies or events, involving many people wearing special clothes.
eg. the pageantry of a military ceremony 閱兵典禮
Mitch: It’s the bands and the drama, the pageantry.
elephant in the room:
一個因為過於龐大或麻煩的問題，導致沒有人願意去碰
an obvious truth that is going unaddressed. The idiomatic expression also
applies to an obvious problem or risk no one wants to discuss.
Phil: I think we should address the elephant in the room.
不知道大家看電影動物方城市 (Zootopia) 時，有沒有聽到這個雙關用法呢？
den (n.):
在美國各區對於 den 的定義及用法各有不同，它可以指客廳、書房、娛樂間等等
a room in the house where people relax, watch television etc.
Jay: I’ll be in the den.
homophobic (adj.): 恐同性戀的
prejudiced against homosexual people
Mitch: I thought you were being homophobic.
lumpy (adj.): 凹凸不平的
covered with or containing small solid pieces.
Phil: Then you got a lumpy rug.
hazard (n.): 危險
something that may be dangerous ,or cause accidents or problems
Phil: Creates a tripping hazard. You open yourself up to lawsuits.
caboodle (n.): 一整組
the whole (kit and) caboodle (informal) everything
Cam: The whole kit and caboodle.
mudflap girl:
1970年代在加州一家汽車零件公司所創造出的圖示（下圖），
這個圖示大多出現在和卡車（擋泥板）相關的器材上，但這幾年在比較常在流行文化中出
現。本集中 Claire 說“With a new mom who looks like she fell off a mudflap.”
的意思其實是說 Gloria is a new sexy mom.

go jump in the lake:
an impolite way of telling someone to go away and stop annoying you
fumble (v.): 漏接
to drop a ball after catching it.
Cam: How can he fumble that?
block sth out: 停止想/試圖忘記某件事
to stop yourself thinking about something or remembering it.
Mitch: I’m really trying to block it out.
這幾集在他們的對話中常出現美式用法的俚語，反而沒有太難的生字，就讓我想到不少人
在英文聽力時覺得每個字都聽得懂，但就是不懂他們到底在說什麼的狀況，我想這可能就
是對於片語和俚語的掌握度不足，真心覺得最好的加強方法就是聽美國人講英文，聽不懂
就重複再聽，有時候其實透過上下文可以大概掌握語意，「猜語意」的技巧也算是學英文
中相當重要的一環喔！
§摩登家庭小趣聞：飾演 Gloria 的 Sofia Vergara 在本劇中給人一種傻大姐的形象，
不禁讓人覺得她是憑著美貌才能擁有今天的生活。現實生活中 Sofia Vergara 大學時在
家鄉哥倫比亞 (Colombia，一個位於中南美洲的國家) 主修牙醫，後來因為獲得一些模特
兒走秀機會而放棄進修，最終又因為家庭因素輾轉到美國發展，關於她的驚人事蹟還有很
多，留著之後慢慢和大家分享囉。
