看摩登家庭學英文_Modern Family S01E06 - 歐美

本週是大學的期中考週，應該有不少人都忙著處理各種期中報告及考試，但學英文的
道路是永無止境的，每個禮拜抽出短短的時間來聽、說、讀英文，一年下來的成果絕對相
當可觀（至於寫的部分則建議在聽、說、讀三部分都有不錯的掌握程度後再開始大量練習
）。書蟲女孩個人覺得對英文的熱愛程度其實是可以培養的，我大概從高中的時候開始喜
歡上英文這個科目，當初是因為覺得空中英語教室雜誌的內容蠻有趣的，但我並沒有每天
聽光碟，一週大概聽個2~3次（本來還只是為了應付學校考試），一年之後我發現我的英
文單字量有大幅的成長，聽力也不再是大問題，雖然我最終沒有唸外文系，但一路上可以
發現英文好的人真的不論在哪都很吃香，感謝起高中的自己有在英文科目上多琢磨，相信
大家如果願意投入時間，英文絕對是相當好掌握的一個語言！加油：）

Modern Family season a episode 6–Run for your wife

本集主軸是小孩們開學第一天的情景，Phil 誤以為 Claire 因為小孩開學家裡空巢而
感到低潮，於是決定要和 Claire 賽跑；Manny 想讓新同學瞭解哥倫比亞文化，決定穿斗
篷去上學並表演排笛，因而引起Gloria和 Jay 兩人的爭執；Mitchell 不小心撞到 Lily
的頭，和 Cam 兩人緊張的帶孩子去看醫生。書蟲女孩個人最喜歡本集的兩個片段分別是
Cam 拿著垃圾桶要砸車窗和 Claire 最後的結語：We do strange things for people we
love. We lie to them, we lie for them. There may be some bumps along the way,
but we never stop wanting the best for them.That’s what it makes such a tough
job. Kind of the best job in the world.這段話真的很貼切的描述家人間的關係，辛
苦卻甜蜜的負擔！

raccoon (n.) 浣熊
a small North American animal with black fur around its eyes and black and
grey rings on its tail.
Phil: That’s you? I thought we had a raccoon.

喜歡看美劇的人應該不難發現，美劇中很常聽到浣熊，因為浣熊在 LA 還算常見，印
象中之後有不少集的摩登家庭都有出現 raccoon這個字

poncho (n.) 斗篷
a type of coat consisting of one large piece of clothe, with a hole in the
middle for your head.
Manny: It’s a traditional Colombian poncho.

shutterbug (n.) 攝影師/愛好攝影的人
A photographer or someone who likes taking pictures.
Cam: I guess I am somewhat a shutterbug.

curb (n.) 人行道邊緣
the raised edge of a road, between where people can walk and cars can drive.
Phil: Here, I’ll help you carry it out to the curb.

merge (v.) 合併（在這邊指併道）
to combine , or to join two things together to form one thing.
Claire: Okay, merge.

hang by a thread 命懸一線
to be in danger of having something unlucky or bad happen.
Claire: Makes you realize we’re all just hanging by a thread.

undermine (v.) 破壞、打擊
to gradually make something or someone less strong or effective.
Jay: Undermine his confidence.

condescending (adj.) 自以為是的
Behaving as though you think you are better, more intelligent ,or more
important than other people. （同義字：patronizing）
Mitchell: So she can be all judgmental and condescending like she’s the
expert.

pat (adv.) （因為很熟悉某事而）反射動作地
to know something throughly so that you can say it, perform it etc immediately
without thinking about it.（用法：have something off/ down pat）
Jay: And maybe my third marriage , I’ll have it a down pat.

jaunty (adj.) 活潑的
showing that you are confident and happy.
Jay: I have been down this road before. I remember one time Mitchel
decided to wear a jaunty scarf to school.

jock (n.) 頭腦簡單、四肢發達的人（建議大家看英文解釋）
someone especially a student, who plays a lot of sport and is often considered
stupid.
Mitchell: I was basically a jock.

top bunk 上下舖中的上舖
bunk (n.) one of two beds that are attached together
Jay: Manny can’t make it to the top bunk.

draft off (這個我實在想不到對應的中文解釋，麻煩大家看英文解釋，如果
有想到不錯的中文對應也歡迎告訴我！)
1.To draft off another person originates from car racing or bike
racing where one competitor travels very closely to the rear of someone else,
thus taking advantage of the wind breaking screen effect. When this is done
correctly far less effort is needed to stay at the same speed as the person in
front.
2.To take advantage of the efforts of someone who is leading the
way.
Phil: Saving my energy , drafting off of you.
補充：
draft 最常見的意思是打草稿（動詞）或草稿（名詞）的意思
(n.) a piece of writing or a plan that is not yet in its finished form.
(v.) to write a plan, letter, report, etc that will need to be changed before
it is in its finished form.

cocky (adj.) 驕傲的
(informal) too confident about yourself and your abilities, especially in a
way that annoys other people.
Phil: You feeling cocky?

這集有不少單字感覺在中文中沒有很準確的對應字，所以建議大家還是讀英文解釋，讀完
之後會發現會單字的瞭解程度和單獨讀中文有很大的差異，我們下週見～

§摩登家庭小趣聞：飾演 Jay 的 Ed O’Neill 其實在摩登家庭這部影集之前就已
經是家喻戶曉的明星了，他在 1987年開拍的影集 Married…with children (凡夫俗妻妙
寶貝)中飾演 Al Bundy 這個角色，Married…with children同樣也是以家庭為核心的情
境喜劇，Ed O’Neill 同樣是一家之主，但是一個事業不順、在家中不受重視，但很重視
家人的爸爸。這部影集共演了11季，在全球 41 個國家播放，有興趣的朋友可以在
YouTube 上搜尋到相關的影片，看看年輕的 Ed O’Neill 有什麼不一樣～
