書蟲女孩這星期忙翻了！各種活動和報告同時擠在這一週，一度放棄如期完成文章，
但想到有不少讀者都很期待每個星期四晚上，於是還是抽空完成第七集的看影集學英文。
這一系列的每一篇的文章都是我花了三、四個小時整理出來的，希望對大家有幫助，如果

Modern Family season a episode 7–En Garde
（En garde 在法文中是「警告」的意思，也是西洋劍的專用術語）

本集主軸為 Manny 的西洋劍比賽，Manny 的勝利滿足了 Jay 一直以來家裡沒有運動
獎盃的遺憾，孰不知 Manny 在決賽時遇到一個家世背景可憐的小女孩，還把人家打得落
花流水。Mitch 和 Claire 解開 20年前花式溜冰的心結，Phil 幫 Luke 找出他的專長。
這一集和上一集一樣，最後都有一段結語，這禮拜 Jay 的結語乍聽之下相當感人，但最
後還是難改他好勝的本性呀！
lethal (adj.) 致命的，同義字：fatal

Jay: Sure. Uncoordinated kid, lethal weapon. How can this go wrong?
fencing (n.) 西洋劍
Alex: Did you know that fencing goes back to the 12th century?

Cam: Who puts wheels on cribs?
drop the ball (idiom) 失敗、錯失
to fail at something.
Phil: We dropped the ball on this one.
panties in a bunch 心煩意亂、易怒的（字面上其實就是內褲皺在一起，類
似不舒服所以看什麼都不爽的概念～）
bunch (n.) a group of things that are fastened, held , or
growing together（一團皺摺）
To become overly upset or emotional over something, especially that which is
trivial or unimportant.
Cam: Let’s talk about why you got your panties in a bunch.
Mitch: Just the Emerald City at the end of my yellow brick road.
emerald (n.) 翡翠、翠綠色
brick (n.) 磚塊
這句話的典故源自於綠野仙蹤 (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz)，我自己個人的解讀
有點類似一路艱辛終於到達目的地，就像 Mitch 在花式溜冰比賽一路過關才進入地區決
賽的感覺一樣～

resentment (n.) 不滿、不爽
a feeling of anger about something has happened that you think is unfair.
stir sth/sb up:to deliberately try to cause arguments or bad feelings between
people.
Cam: So seeing your dad so proud of Manny, didn’t stir up any resentment.
cannon (n.) 大砲檯
a large heavy powerful gun that was used in the past to fire heavy metal balls
Phil: Okay, you rest that cannon while I run this down ,okay?
(這邊的 cannon 應該用來比喻 Luke 戴棒球手套的手，投球的時候就像砲台發射炸彈的
感覺)
patio (n.) 露台
a flat hard area near a house, where people sit outside.
Phil: I wish you could go back to the patio...
clinging (adj.) 黏人的
someone who is clinging (also clingy) is too dependent on another person
Mitch: I wasn’t the clinging little brother.
mortify (v.) 感到蒙羞
to cause someone to feel extreme offended ,ashamed, or embarrassed.
Jay: I didn’t decide if I am feeling more proud or mortified.
