Reality TV Games participated in a post-elimination phone call with America
Next Top Model 16's Nicole Lucas.
How old are you?
Twenty (Height?) 5'11" (ethnicity / nationality?) German. (Hometown?)
Orlando, Florida. (Did you grow up in Orlando?) Yes, I've been here my whole
life. (When you go to the grocery store is Mickey Mouse walking down the
other aisle?) (Laughs), no, no, no I live thirty minutes away, so I am not in
the Disney World area. (So Mickey Mouse does not live down the street from
you? ) No (laughs)... Disney pays really well and gives great benefits so a
lot of my sorority sisters [have worked for them], I went to school with a
girl who played Stich and another girl who plays Bell. (Where are you in
school?) I go to the University of Central Florida and my major is
psychology. (What year?) I am finishing up my sophomore year, I took a year
off because I modeled in Singapore and I filmed the show.
Describe your family, are you an only child?
I was actually born a [fraternal] twin but my twin sister died of cancer when
we were very young... about fifteen months old... [Later] My parents are
still together and live together and I am very fortunate in that way.
How did you become interested in modeling?
I have always been slightly interested in fashion and the first time I got
[an issue of] Teen Vogue was when Gemma Ward was on the cover, in 2005 I
think. The first time I saw her and read about her... I just wanted to be
exactly like her and that's when I decided to [become a model and I went to
Miami] and did my first test shoot. (How old were you?) Fifteen. (Were your
parents supportive?) At first, they did not want me modeling because of the
rejection and body image issues... now they are extremely supportive of
everything that I do; they know that I did really well in Singapore and
support me doing what makes me happy.
How did you get from Orlando to Singapore?
My [former] manager [is a talent manager out of Pennsylvania] and he set me
up in Singapore. (Pennsylvania?) Yeah, I met him in Orlando... he comes down
here frequently and he scouted me in a mall. (So how was this guy able to
become your manager, because anypervertone can approach an attractive girl in
a mall and say that they are a manager?) I know... I know, I've been
approached by anyone and everyone when I've gone to the mall... I can't tell
how many times that's happened... someone telling me, "I'm a manager... can
you model for me?" but the distinguishing factor with this manager was that
he gave me [and my parents references and information about other models he
managed and their parents], so that we could make sure that he was reputable.
Did you get homesick when you were in Singapore?
I did get kinda homesick since it was my first trip away from home. [I'd been
living in an apartment in college], but it's only about thirty minutes away
from my parents house and I saw them several times a week so living across
the world in Singapore was extremely new for me and it was a little difficult
at first, I wanted to come home like the first week, but then I was working
almost every single day and things got a lot better and now I have the travel
bug and I just want to travel all the time.
What are your plans when it comes to modeling?
I have to finish this semester out at school, so I'll either do that and
maybe even before... I would love to get back into modeling. Since my trip to
Singapore last year I found out that modeling is one of my greatest passions
and there's no way that I can give up now. I modeled for three few months
last year - from runway, to campaigns to editorials... everything. (Isn't
Singapore one of the cities where models make good money?) Yes, my agency
said that I was one of their most successful girls and I was with the best
agency, Avenue. IMG New York also sends all their girls who travel [to
Singapore], so I modeled with IMG girls... that was pretty cool. (Are you
currently signed?) No, I had to give up every contract that I had but I still
have kind of a contract with Avenue still, they said that I was always
welcome to come back and I had to sign something that said that I would not
work with any another agency in Singapore, so I am still in contact with my
bookers over there and they are really, really sweet and said that they would
love to have me back. (later) (Are agencies pursuing you?) [They can't until]
two weeks from my elimination is what I understand. (Do you plan to go back
to Singapore?) I'd love to go back to Singapore, it's one of my favorite
places, it's beautiful there, it's not cold at all, it's very hot which I
like and it's clean and safe, I love everything about it and I worked a lot,
which is always a plus.
Why do you think that you were so successful in Singapore... what reasons do
you think that your agent would give regarding your success?
I am a hard worker, I studied this industry like its my major in college. I
know all the models, the agencies, magazine editorials, I studied all of that
because it's my business and I treat it like its a business and that's why
I've been successful thus far.
What types of modeling interests you the most?
I love everything... I prefer to do a little bit of everything... I don't
just want to be a commercial girl or an editorial girl because that's not how
you make a lasting career or how you make money either. Surprisingly, a lot
of people don't know this but catalog pays the most, most editorials pay
models $200-250 even for supermodels - they don't pay much at all. I was paid
very well in Singapore for all my campaigns and catalogs... I don't know why
they paid so much more but it was so much easier than editorial and usually
the working conditions are better I don't know why some look down on quote
commercial work because that's how you make your money. (Not you
specifically, but in general how much does catalog pay new models?) I don't
know about New York... [I don't know for sure about Singapore, maybe between
$3,000 and $10,000 per day].
How did you come to be cast on Top Model?
It was very unusual how it happened. [I am a member of tyra.com] and got an
email from The Tyra Show and... I don't know why, I happened to open it and
it said that Tyra extended the deadline for submissions for America's Next
Top Model Cycle 16 so I was like, "what the heck, I'll submit some
pictures... no one's going to contact me... no way," and then the next day I
got an email from [casting director] Michelle Mock's assistant asking me to
come to an audition, but I could not make it to the auditions, so I did an
i-chat interview with the casting producer and that's how I got invited [to
LA] for the semi-finals.
How did you like living in Los Angeles and the Top Model house?
I love LA, that was my first time ever going to LA and I actually want to
move there, I just feel very at home there.
One of our members wanted you to know that "you wuz robbed!"
(Laughs), that's kinda funny. I am OK with being eliminated from the show, I
think that everything happens for a reason and obviously God has a different
plan for me. There are some great girls in the competition and I am not
bitter about being eliminated. (Also, at the old-young thing.) Thank you, I
did not like any of my pictures on the show. I also don't look like that in
real life or in my other pictures and I'm still kinda dumbfounded about how I
came across looking like that.
Who do you think will win?
Mikaela, Molly or Brittani, I think that they are the most high fashion out
of everyone left.
What few words pop in your mind about...
Jay Manuel - I did not have the best experience with him.
J Alexander - He's absolutely amazing... his life story is great and he
talked to us a lot off camera and I think that he is an extraordinary person!
Nigel - Nice, despite his first comment about my mouth looking like a cat's
ass.
Andre Leon Talley - Intimidating.
Tyra - I love her, she's still is one of my role models.
Who are your favorite fashion designers?
Balmain, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, Balenciaga and Marchesa.
Who are your favorite models?
Oh gosh, I have so many favorite models! I've always loved Gemma Ward and I
know that she is not modeling any more but she still remains one of my
favorite models. I also love Abbey Lee Kershaw, Lara Stone, Arizona Muse,
Karlie Kloss, Natasha Poly, Tanya [Dziahileva], a whole lot... but thise are
my main ones.
