Next Top Model 13's Lulu Braithwaite
**************************************************
Who were your closest friends in the house?
Definitely Courtney, definitely Ashley and they really didn't show this, but
Rae and I were really, really close... Jen, love her and Sundai.
Overall did you think that you were portrayed fairly?
Um, it would have been better if they portrayed me the same way from the
beginning... I was the same way from the day that I got there, I spoke the
same, I acted the same, I didn't just wake up one morning and start sh@@
talking about people, that's just how they showed it, I didn't like how they
edited it like I just woke up and said, "you know what, I am going to talk
about Brittany, there were things leading up to the things that I said and
events that happened before, so it makes sense what I was saying, but
watching it it's like, "why is she always talking sh@@ all the time about
these girls?" So I didn't like that aspect, but I didn't really mind the way
that they portrayed me. (What didn't we see that would have given us more
context?) I remember at one photo shoot I said Brittany was irking me or
whatever and I said something then.
In terms of your relationship with Ashley, do you agree with the opinion
expressed that you were a follower, that you were basically being led around
by Ashley?
I don't agree with that at all. Ashley don't kill me for saying this, but if
anything I was the ringleader and Ashley was the sidekick. We would talk
about things that we both had the same feelings about, we had agreement on a
lot of things.
Who did you clash with in the house?
Erin and I did not get along at all... we did not have drama or or anything,
but it was an unsaid, known thing. I don't know if it was one sided with me
not wanting to talk to her, but there was something that did not rub me the
right way from the moment that I met her, so I don't want to be fake and just
laugh and have them show me being fake on TV...I just didn't get along with
her.
Who do you think is the most talented model of the girls still in the house?
Who would you like to see win Top Model?
When it comes to what you get for winning Top Model, the contract and the
"Seventeen" spread, Laura best fits that category to me. She is more
"Seventeen" than any of the other contestants. When it comes to modeling, I
love the way Rae looks in photographs Hopefully Jen will win, no Asian girl
has ever won and she is a short Asian, that will blow everyone's mind... and
Laura, it would be good to see someone who would be so appreciative, not to
say that everyone else does not appreciate the opportunity, but she would
appreciate it so much more than the other girls... she lives on a farm so
winning would be big for her.
What was your favorite challenge or photo shoot? What was your least favorite
challenge or photo shoot?
The smizing challenge was my favorite, that was the one thing that I was
always the most terrified of that Tyra would ask me to smize and I would look
like a retard, but I did it and won the challenge! (What was your least
favorite?) I liked all of them actually... I was just so excited to be part
of it that I can't complain about anything. I liked everything... they could
have thrown me in the mud and I would have been,"this is great!"
What was the most consistent positive and negative feedback that you got from
the judges?
Negative... was that I was not fierce enough in my photos, I looked too
relaxed... positive, well Nigel said that I was his favorite person to look
at in the room. They told me that I was long and lean, which is a good thing.
In my runway walk, Miss J said that I need to take longer steps. (will that
compromise your signature walk?) No, not really, (Which judge (or judges) do
you think supported you the most?) Hmmm, probably Nigel.
Do you have previous modeling experience?
I started doing fashion shows around my neighborhood, with friends of mine
who had clothing lines, they would throw fashion shows in their backyards or
somewhere like that. I just always had this thing about runway... my father
is 6'3" and I prayed that I would get a little bit taller so I can do runway.
(Are you tapped into the Brooklyn / Williamsburg fashion scene?) Well now
that I am eliminated, I can actually go around to them, but it wasn't like
that before... Brooklyn is coming up to be this big fashion scene and that is
really cool because Brooklyn and I are growing together. (Do you have an
agent?) No. (Do you plan to pursue representation?) Definitely, I will take
anyone who will have me (laughs).
Are your stats the same as when you started the show, how tall are you?
You're nineteen, right? Are you still in New York?
I am 5'7" and I live in Brooklyn. (What is your ethnicity / nationality?) I
am African-American, my mother is from Guyana.
Since you are outside the standard for modeling, what is your strategy to
deal with this, how does it factor into the type of modeling that you plan to
pursue?
I guess that I will have to rule out the runway part of my dream, for now,
but definitely print and I definitely want to do commercials and even get
into some acting work, anything that allows me to be involved in fashion,
fashion is everything, anything that has me in fashion I'll do.
What markets do you see yourself in?
I was discussing this with a friend of the family and we came up with
California being the best place for me to go because not only could I model
out there, but I can do acting... it would be hard for me to get modeling
jobs at 5'7," so any industry that I could get into... acting or commercials
or print, and what better place to go and be an actress than California.
You mentioned in casting that you have been in a relationship with a woman
for a couple of years, was it difficult coming out and being out in your
community, how has it affected you?
It affected me, not only in my social life with the friends that I used to
have that I don't have now, but it also affected my family life because I
don't know if you know anyone from Guyana, but they are pretty strict about
their religion and about a man being for a woman and a woman being for a man.
It was a shock... it was a shock even to myself, when I started to have
certain feelings, I was scared... it was hard for me to just come out and say
it, but I didn't wait that long, probably a couple of months after I knew I
wanted to be with a female, I just came out and said it, I didn't hide it or
anything. I think hiding it would have been worse than the disappointment or
whatever that my family had when I came out. I'd rather for them to have a
[negative] opinion about it or whatever rather than to hide it. (So now that
you are an "established" (for lack of a better word) lesbian how are things
now?) Well everyone that knew me before the show knew that I was an
"established" lesbian, but now that it is on national TV I guess... the thing
with my family is that they know but it was a "don't ask, don't tell" kinda
thing. (What does that mean?) It means that if your grandmother doesn't want
to talk about it, then you don't talk about it; they just act like nothing
has changed since I was ten, so now that I have been on national television,
it was like in your face and they can't act like nothing has happened, so I
am kinda happy that the show came out and that was on it because now you
can't really deny what the truth is.
It seemed like in the the house, your sexual orientation was a non-issue, am
I reading that correctly?
Yeah, I was not surprised at all because where I am from no one really cares
about anyone's sexual orientation. I hang out with transvestites,
trans-gendered, no one cares about anything but hanging out and having fun,
so I didn't go into the house too nervous about anyone judging me, but it was
surprising that no one... well they did asked questions, of course, the
typical lesbian questions but no one was uncomfortable or anything... it was
a really cool environment and I was shocked. (So what are the typical lesbian
questions?) Like how do you guys have sex, what happens when you go on
dates... who pays, who is the aggressive one and who's the girly-girl, things
like that.
Who are your favorite designers?
Hmm... Alexander McQueen, the funny thing is that I did not fall in love with
him until I got on the show and we passed by one of his stores in LA and I
was in love. (Who is your favorite model?) Beverly Johnson.
Did you watch Top Model in the past? Were you a fan of the show?
Yeah, I watched every cycle since Cycle 1 up until the end of Cycle 12
because I was away... at Cycle 13 (laughs), but I asked my mother to tape it
for me and I watched it when I got home and when I saw that Teyona won, I was
so happy. I love the show, not so much the reality show part, but I love that
it is a modeling competition. (What are your favorite cycles and who are your
favorite ANTM competitors?) I don't remember the numbers, but the one that
Eva won - I love Eva and the one that Mercedes didn't win. (Who are your
other Top Model favorites? I loved CariDee - that's who Jen reminds me of a
lot...Caridee, I liked Naima also, even though she was quiet.
What few words pop in your mind about
Jay Manuel - Hmmm, I don't know, I would say outspoken, but Miss J is more
outspoken, I will stick with outspoken.
Jay Alexander - Outspoken... exciting, real... could be my best friend if he
wanted to.
Nigel - He is HANDSOME, very proper, he makes a lot of sense when he speaks,
I like to listen to him speak, he makes sense.
Tyra - Expert, she knows exactly what will make a picture that much better...
make it stick out even more... and how to fix you to take a proper picture of
you.
What is on your i-pod?
I recently dowmloaded the new Jay-Z album, Blue Print, he's from Brooklyn so
I gotta support hum. I love soul music like Jill Scott, India Arie, Lauren
Hill and Erykah Badu....Common... I love anything that is slow and mellow. I
love Paramore, they are my favorite rock band. I am so diverse with my music
and I play music to my emotions... if I am having a happy day, then I am
going to play something happy, if I am sad, then I am going to play something
emo, if I am going through something emotional, then I am going to play a
blues song. My i-pod is so messed up, people don't even ask me for my i-pod,
they are like "you have too many things going on in there."
Who are your favorite TV and movie stars?
I love Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore... Sandra Bullock as well is on my
list. As far as actors, Will Smith, definitely, I am just going to put one on
that list.
How did you feel about your makeover? Did you have difficulty maintaining
your makeover look? Are you planning on keeping the look or changing it?
Umm, I liked the look, I am not a fan of hair or weaves and it was itchy as
heck, but if they felt that it would boost my career and make me look more
modelesque, then I could put up with it, but I didn't really like the weave
at all. (It sounds like you no longer have the makeover, are you back to the
look you had at casting?) I am... I have the short hair again, I get in the
shower, I wash my hair every day and I don't have to worry about blow drying
it for hours like the people with long hair do.
Do you have any regrets, is there anything that you would do differently?
No, no matter how they edited it or filmed it, I know what I did.
What did you do prior to Top Model and what are you doing now?
Previous to Top Model I was working ina sex shop in the city (Manhattan) and
now I am not doing anything.
Tell me about your family and friends.
My friends are my family, my friends are closer to me than my family. They
are all different shapes, sizes, ethnicities, colors. When we walk together
down the street, it looks like we own the world together as friends. It is a
pretty diverse group that I hang out with and they are the world to me
because when I went through the identity-sexuality thing with my family, they
were the ones that were there for me. My family they are all crazy just like
me, but I love them, we have had our ups and downs, more downs than I'd like,
but that is because a lot of the people in my family grew up in a different
time and background and we're in America now, everything is so much different
now than when they grew up and we all just have to try and understand each
other. My mother has three kids, I have an older brother and an older sister
and my father has eight kids and I am the baby on both sides. My mother
raised two of my father's kids, so they grew up in the house with me, people
would want to know if they are my step-brothers or whatever and I am like,
"they are my brothers." (You can be your own episode of the Tyra Show.) I
KNOW! (laughs) and I am in New York, so she should just call me up and have
me over.
