Reality TV Games participated in a post-elimination phone call with America
Next Top Model 13's Ashley Howard.
Are you 5'6"? Are you from Chicago or Brooklyn?
Yes. I am from Chicago, my father got a job out here and my family moved to
New York when I was still in elementary school, but I will always consider
Chicago my hometown, a lot of my family is still there and we still make
trips back there to see my grandma and grandpa, (What kind of artist are
you?) A lot of people see that [my occupation is an artist] and think I paint
(laughs), but I majored in dramatic studies in college [at SUNY Purchase]. I
have been performing since I was seven, I started dancing when I was twelve.
Since I graduated [in May 2008], I have been teaching dance part-time to
kids, I teach tap, hip hop, jazz, I love working with children!
Tell us about how you came to be on Top Model, I know Tyra talked about
seeing you in the audience at her talk show, but what happened from your
standpoint?
I went to the open call in New York a week before and stood in line for
twelve hours straight but because of the stampede, I wasn't seen. I found out
that Tyra was doing a show about it and I signed up for it immediately and
then I got a call and they told me that the topic had changed and don't come
expecting it to be about Top Model, so I went and at the very end of the show
when it was finished, someone came up to me and asked me for my information
and said it was for upcoming shows and I said, "OK," then the next day from
someone called saying that they were from Top Model. OK??? I was a bit
confused, it was amazing, but I didn't understand what was going on, then at
the first panel, Tyra asked me if I knew how I got there and that's when I
found out that her hairdresser had seen me and pointed me out to her. It was
awesome...a great feeling, I think a lot of girls come to the show to be
seen, and Tyra even told me that at panel, she said that I have no idea how
many girls come to her show hoping to be discovered; wherever she is, these
girls are eyeing her and walking past her in certain ways, I guess hoping
that she will recommend them for [ANTM], but she never has, so it was cool
that she discovered me and that I was the first that she ever selected from
her show.
What made you go to the open audition?
My family and my boyfriend especially have been encouraging me to model,
they've been telling me to just take some pictures and drop them off at an
agency and see what happens, but I was really discouraged because of my
height, so it wasn't that I had no interest in modeling, I just thought that
I could never get pass the height issue, so when I heard about the short
cycle that became my in, it was a major opportunity.
So now that you have more information and been through the experience do you
think that you can make it as a model at your height?
I'm the type of person that if you tell me, "you can't do this and you can't
do that," I am going to try it regardless, so it is definitely something I am
going to pursue. (What is your strategy to break into modeling?) I want to
get more experience in front of the camera, my sister is a model - she is
5'10" and she has worked with a lot of photographers, she has done a Mecca
campaign, L'Oreal - if you go into a store, you will see her on a box, she's
been in videos, so she is my go to girl in terms of what is the next step for
me, I don't completely know how yet, but I am definitely going to try. (Do
you plan to pursue an agency?) I definitely want to get signed, I have my Top
Model photos in my portfolio, I want to build it some more and put together a
good portfolio and then take my book to the agencies. I hoping that an agency
Ford, Elite, Wilhelmina will be interested.
Overall did you think that you were portrayed fairly?
Clearly in a few ways no, at the end of the day I know what I said, but I
can't be upset with how I was portrayed, I signed up for the show. It's not
like I said anything absurd or obscene, I didn't do anything crazy or
far-fetched, I kept my eye on winning. I stayed positive and I was true to
myself and I represented myself and my family well.
Why were you and Lulu so critical?
Everybody talked about everybody, I talked to Lulu as a friend, Erin and Rae
were close and they talked about a lot of things that they would not talk to
others about. I wasn't starting drama in the house and I didn't lose focus.
(What about when you and Lulu were criticizing another girl's walk?) All of
the girls did that; everyone got on the runway and walked and we all
critiqued each girl's walk. I got up there and walked and all of them
critiqued me. (What about when Nicole referred to you as a "mean girl" and a
bully?) I am not a bully at all, that is probably the strangest thing that
could be said about me. I can be blunt and I speak my mind, Bianca knew how I
felt about her and Nicole knew that Bianca knew. Lulu and I saw a lot in the
house and spoke to each other about it, other girls did the same, I wasn't
being mean or outright rude and Nicole knew that.
So what happened with Erin at the Wal-Mart challenge and afterwards?
I had no clue what happened, all I know was that I could not find my
picture... and it seemed like everyone else had found their picture so fast.
I found out later from Bianca and Sundai that she came over to them and said,
"Ha, ha I had Ashley's picture in my hand and I threw it away," when I found
out about that, I was so angry, I got so annoyed... I don't know, I just felt
like it was kind of a childish move. Of course, I wasn't expecting her to
just hand me my picture, but I wouldn't expect her to throw it away and make
it harder for me either; first of all I wouldn't have grabbed a bunch of
pictures. Erin is just young... young-minded and [ANTM was] a tough situation
for her. (So was the scene in the limo right after you found out about it?)
It was a couple of days later, no one said anything to her [in the house],
but we were talking about how sore and bruised we were from the challenge and
she thought that we were pointing to her... when she started to cry the limo
a number of us were taken aback, it was like, "Really... really Erin?!?!" To
me wrong is wrong and if someone needs to be put in their place, I have no
problem doing that, no one else did that, no one else pulled on other people.
You don't hold someone back, that is common sense, if two year olds were
racing, you wouldn't let them do that. (Did she eventually understand where
you and others were coming from?) She thinks that what she did was fine, but
if any of us did that to her she would have raised hell.
How did you like living in Los Angeles and the Top Model house?
It was a lot of fun, I did not see as much of LA as I wanted but it was fun.
I lived with seven girls in college, so I didn't have a problem there. (Who
were you closest to in the house?) I was very close to Nicole even though it
seemed like we had a rough patch... and Lulu and Rae. (Who are you in touch
with?) I have been in touch with Bianca recently, we became good friends
after the show... Lisa ..Jennifer. I text some of the girls, I have been in
touch with almost all of them, probably Bianca and Rae the most. (Who did you
clash with?) Of course at the very beginning I clashed with Bianca, we really
did not have much to say... we weren't in each other's face or anything and
toward the middle probably Nicole and Brittany, but then that changed.
Who are you rooting for?
Rae definitely and Sundai and Nicole. (Who has the most potential?) Sundai
and Nicole are fighters, they have great looks, they are both beautiful girls
and they have positive attitudes towards the competition.
What was your favorite challenge or photo shoot? What was your least favorite
challenge or photo shoot?
My favorite challenge was the dance challenge, even though my group didn't do
well I had fun, it was great meeting the Jabbawockeez. My favorite photo
shoot was the "look long" shoot. The hair and make up were great, the set was
great, and the photographer was really cool, really relaxing. My least
favorite challenge was the Walmart one where I got bruised up. I don't have a
least favorite photo shoot, I enjoyed all of them, they were fun!. I had a
lot of fun at the photo shoot with the horses, the baby one was fun too,
(Were you nervous about posing nude?) When it happened I was not as nervous
as you would think, now if we were butt naked, it may have been different,
but we were just topless and we had a lot of hair.
How did you feel about your makeover? Do you still have your makeover?
Yes, I still have makeover... I love my makeover!! I thought that they were
going to cut it off, but I got long hair.
What kind of feedback did you got from the judges?
That twenty-two is a little old to be starting in the modeling business, my
response is that I don't look twenty-two, the girls in the house had no idea
that I was twenty-two. Also, I needed to work on my walk, it was not
terrible, but I needed to work on it. (In some of the shoots, it seemed like
you had a problem connecting with the camera, is that correct?) I didn't feel
so terrible about my last photo shoot, there was a lot going on. I think I
had a much better shot, I was "in" in that photo shoot and I gave what I had
to give. I think I did better and that I had better shots. During the look
tall photo shoot, I got really good feedback from Jay and the photographer,
and when I got to panel it was different situation. (What about your dance
background, do you think you could have used your dance background better?)
That's hard to say, I didn't think that I used it so much that it was getting
in the way. I got different kinds of feedback regarding my dance background,
in the beginning it was good and then I used it too much, there was a lot of
confusion there. I don't think it hurt in the end and I don't think that I
used it too much or it was got in my way. (Were you afraid of being too
dancey?) I never went into a photo shoot saying, you need to use your dance,
I just went in and said, just do the photo shoot and do your best.
Did you watched Top Model before you were cast on the show?
I definitely watched the show before, pretty much from the beginning. I have
seen the majority of cycles. (What was your favorite cycle?) I really enjoyed
last cycle (cycle 12) and probably the first cycle. (Who were your favorite
competitors?) I really liked Yaya... Yoanna... Mercedes - I liked her a lot,
I liked a lot of the Cycle 12 girls, I liked Sandra and Tahlia.
Were you ever told that you look like Ciara?
I haven't heard that before and now, I never heard it before so much in my
life. I don't think that I looked like her.
Who are your favorite models?
Jourdan Dunn, Selita Ebanks and Adriana Lima.
What few words pop in your mind about
Tyra - Honest, gorgeous, silly, makes a lot of jokes, fun-loving, inspiring.
ay Manuel - Oh my gosh, very well put together, never disheveled or
flustered. He knows what he is doing..
Nigel - Very handsome... he gave very good feedback, I think that he looked
at our pictures fairly and kind, he is a kind person.
Jay Alexander - Funny...honest...hilarious. He was very honest during our
teaches...
