NCIS means New Complications In Store

For Gibbs and his investigators, this is no time
for naval gazing. Ari the assassin is lurking.

The NCIS team is bathed in sweat and surrounded by sadness during a difficult
location shoot.

Dressed in black in 105-degree heat at a Glendale cemetery outside of Los
Angeles, the cast members file steadily past the casket of their comrade Kate
Todd (Sasha Alexander), who was shot in the head in last season's stunning
final episode. Mark Harmon, who plays the curt, confrontational Leroy
Jethro Gibbs, bends forward, whispering his apologies: "I'm sorry, Kate."

The bitter farewell airs this week in the finale of a two-part season opener
for the third-year drama. As Kate is laid to rest, her fatally handsome
assassin
Ari (Rudolf Martin) has more menace in mind, says NCIS creator Don Bellisario.
Ari will find devious ways to torment Gibbs, his pallid-skinned forensic
specialist (Pauley Perrett) and his Scotland Yard-trained coroner (David
McCallum).

As for dear, departed Kate, she's gone but not forgotten. The NCIS team is
seeing apparitions of her this week as both a Catholic schoolgirl and a Goth
angel.

NCIS viewers haven't forgotten the actress who played Kate, either.
Bellisario
received hundreds of angry e-mails from diehards who insisted that Alexander
simply could not be replaced. His decision was to add two new actresses
to broaden and internationalize the team: Cote de Pablo (Fox's The Jury)
joins as Ziva David, a Mossad agent assigned to NCIS who is immediately
at odds with Gibbs. She's there to investigate Ari, who at first she believes
is innocent. (We know better).

Lauren Holly plays Jenny Shephard, an investigator with a sizzling sexual
history with Gibbs. In flashback scenes of their affair in Paris and other
European cities, "you see a whole new side of Gibbs," Holly says. "We were
like animals."

Meanwhile, Lethario-in-training Tony Dinozzo (Michael Weatherly) finally
meets
his match in Ziva. She arrives in desert fatigues and checks him out from
head to toe. "Kate was puritanical, but Ziva comes on strong," de Pablo
says.

Weatherly doesn't seem to mind. "I am praying to get close enough to Cote
to find out what kind of shampoo she uses," he says.

Considering Bellisario's penchant for putting characters in grave danger,
it might be wiser to stay out of everyone's hair.
