Reality TV Games participated in a post-elimination phone call with America
Next Top Model 16's Mikaela Schipani
How old are you?
Twenty-one. (Height?) 5'9" (ethnicity / nationality?) Italian and Irish.
(Hometown?) Boca Raton, Florida.
What were you doing before the show?
I was going to school full time, I am studying theater and I was acting and
modeling professionally. (What kind of modeling?) Runway, print stuff,
editorial. (Based in Miami?) I was actually signed with Wilhelmina for three
years and I canceled my contract with them [and I was working with several
agencies non-exclusively before I went to audition for America's Next Top
Model]. (Are you back in school?) No, because of everything with Top Model...
we filmed the show last Fall, so I could not go to school last semester but
it was worth it... hopefully I can finish my degree this summer, I only have
twelve credits left so that's good.
How does modeling in "real life" compare to modeling on the show?
It is definitely interesting, the thing I noticed the most, that I was not
used to was when we were doing a photo shoots on the show, we never got to
see any of our film; and to me getting to see your film and working with the
photographer on that level is an integral part of a photo shoot. You want to
know how you're doing and you want to know what direction the photographer
wants to take you in, so they would usually let you see some shots and say,
"that was good," or "maybe you should do this." It was definitely something
to get used to because sometimes I felt kind of clueless, I felt like I was
doing a great job and then I would go to panel and I'd see a photo that
wasn't so good, so it was very confusing.
What do "real" models say about America's Next Top Model?
I have a lot of colleagues, girlfriends that I have been modeling with in the
past and they have been nothing but supportive, everyone has been really
great about it and congratulating me. I think that I am taken just as
seriously especially because I had a career before America's Next Top Model
so that was never really a concern of mine, but everyone has been wonderful
about it and really supportive.
Now that you have seen your photos and seen the show, do you think that what
was shown truly reflected your abilities as a model?
I honestly did not know what to think sometimes, I would see a photo and
think, "wow, that's a good photo and hopefully I will get called towards the
top," and I wouldn't, I would get called towards the bottom, in like the
bottom four. It would be very hard to gauge how I was doing, I think that
that was my biggest frustration in the competition because when I do a photo
shoot in real life I know whether it's going well or going badly, so yeah I
am not sure that all the photos I saw are a reflection of me as a model on
the whole.
Of course it is a matter of opinion but what were the there photos did you
think you should have been called out higher for?
There were a couple of photos that I was like, "what, I can't believe that I
got called so late," for the bee photo shoot, I think that I was called sixth
maybe and I think that I did a really good job for a beauty shot, and when I
saw my photo for the jaguar shoot, I was like, "they are going to call me
towards the top," I was very excited and thought, "that was a good photo and
I hope they agree," and then it turns out that I got called late in the game,
so I was a little confused by that, but I just came back every week wanting
to do better.
What are your plans going forward?
I am going to keep working... doing what I was doing before, it is kind of on
a bigger scale though; I am getting a lot of really great offers, stuff that
I would have never gotten before the show. Hopefully, I am going to go to New
York for the summer and work and get to work with a new agency, I'm excited.
(When do you plan to be in New York?) My birthday is June 1 and I would like
to be there on my birthday and then be there for a couple of months until
next fall [and then return to Florida] when the season picks back up, but I
really want to make an impression in New York.
How did you come to be cast on Top Model?
A lot of my friends don't know a lot about the modeling industry but they had
always seen the show and they were always telling me, "oh you should audition
for America's Next Top Model." I just think that I was not ready to when
people were suggesting it to me. I don't know whatever happened when I turned
twenty-one and I decided that it would be a good idea. Yeah a lot of people
would tell me to audition and that I could do it but I did not know how far
that I could really make it. (later) I have a Model Mayhem page, which is
like Facebook for models and someone sent me and email and asked me if I
wanted to come audition in Nashville, I was like, "wow, Nashville is kinda
far, but maybe I should do it... maybe I should take a chance." I made the
drive and I auditioned and I made all the cuts and then I went home and a
couple of weeks later I got a call that I was a semi-finalist and they flew
me out to LA.
How did you like living in Los Angeles and the Top Model house?
I loved LA, I had never been there before, it was my first time on the west
coast. I had such a great time and I would definitely like to live in LA
whenever I am done with my modeling days... I'd like to direct stuff, I'd
like to act, so I'd love to end up in LA, it was beautiful.
What kind of acting have you done?
I have done commercials, some short film stuff, theater, it's been a lot of
fun and I want to continue to do it, but right now my priority is modeling. I
know that models can't model forever so I want to take it to the limit with
that. (What is your ideal acting gig?) I'd like to do dramatic film, I think
that that is where I fit best.
Who were your friends in the house?
I pretty much got along with everyone... I still talk to Sara, Monique,
Molly, Brittani. I had a good bond with them and just talked to Monique and
Sara last night.
How would you describe the interpersonal dynamics of Top Model 16?
When we got into the house at first it was a little jarring (laughs), we were
just thrown into this situation with all of these girls and you don't really
know what to do. I am more of a guys girl, I usually get along better with
guys but I was very surprised that I was able to build a relationship and was
able to bond with these girls. We all have a great relationship and getting
to know everyone was something that was valuable.
What do you think about the incident between Brittani and Alexandria?
I thought that both of them had a valid point, Alexandria wanted to be
recognized for her work and Brittani did not think that Alexandria deserved
what she got. I don't think that any of them are bad people, I think that
they are good people... that's just the way it happened, there was an
argument and then panel turned into this big intense thing and I guess that's
just the way it goes... they were both passionate about the what they felt
and stood up for it, so it was cool. (How long was Brittani out of the room?)
It was all a blur, I don't know how long ... she had a panic attack... I
don't know how long she was out of the room, twenty minutes maybe, but yeah
she was having a hard time recovering, she was overwhelmed so we had to wait
for her to get back to herself. (So what did you all do when she was out of
the room?) Everyone was pretty shocked, we kinda just stood there not knowing
what to do, I don't think that any of us were expecting such a blow out, it
turned into something way bigger than we ever thought it would, so yeah we
kinda stood around waiting like, "OK, what's going to happen next," it was a
pretty unpredictable day.
Were you surprised that it ultimately came down to you and Brittani?
My place in the competition kind of changed when I was in the bottom two with
Monique the week before, I don't think that either of us deserved to be in
the bottom two so I was kind of surprised. When I had my last photo shoot, I
don't think that I expected to be in the bottom two but once I got to panel,
I knew that I was leaving that day and then Brittani freaked out and we saw
her photo, I knew that she was in the bottom two with me but I knew I was
going to leave.
What few words pop in your mind about...
Jay Manuel - I respect him and I think that he has a wonderful career and he
knows what he is doing, but sometimes it was hard for me to get a read on how
I was doing. It was very difficult to know how I was doing in a photo shoot,
sometimes he would tell me that I did a great job, he'd talk me up and give
me all these compliments and then I'd go to panel and I'd see a picture that
was definitely less than perfect... I value his opinion but I don't think
that we always agreed.
J Alexander - He was one of my favorites, getting to work with him was
amazing... I always admired him from the show... he's hilarious... he's
knowledgeable and I actually learned a lot from him.
Nigel - Nigel is one of those judges who is going to be super honest with
you. It seems like to me that oftentimes he would disagree with all of the
other judges and he stands by his decision... he is successful for a reason,
so I did take his criticism and opinion seriously and tried to incorporate it
into my photo shoots.
Tyra - I have a lot of respect for Tyra, I would not be where I am now
without her. she was so supportive and when I got eliminated, she even said
that she wanted me to stay and that meant a lot to me. All of the criticisms
that she gave me, I took them to heart and I am going to continue to think
about it in my future career for sure.
Did you watch Top Model before?
Yes and I have always been intrigued, but I don't think that I had the
confidence to audition until I turned twenty-one for whatever reason, but
then I decided that maybe I should audition and see how far I can go.
Who are your favorite ANTM competitors?
I always liked Caridee, I thought that she was fantastic and when I saw cycle
15 I was amazed by Jane, I thought that she was fantastic, one of the
strongest models that I have ever seen on Top Model. (What is your favorite
cycle?) I appreciate cycle 15 the most maybe because it was high fashion and
then I did cycle 16 which was high fashion as well, but of course the first
season is something that you should never forget ... and Adrienne... so that
was definitely fun to watch.
Who are your favorite fashion designers?
I love Calvin Klein... I love Dior and Vivienne Westwood.
Who are your favorite models?
We got to meet Erin Wasson. I love Lindsey Wixson... I love Crystal Renn,
plus sized or not... Andrej Pejic is the best.
Are you on Facebook, Twitter or some other social network?
Coming soon
Is there anything you would like to say to your fans?
I appreciate the support, I never expected to get so much support and people
have been nothing but wonderful and I appreciate it so much.
Adrianne
